Pioneer CT-F8282 Supply reel issue?

I've been in the process of rebuilding my CT-F8282 transport - new belts / rewind pulley (WJOE) and rebuilt idler (@markthefixer) and today I put it all back together (well at least to the point that I put power to the transport.

On putting a cassette in, no function will move the tape. So I tried the functions with no cassette loaded (pushed in the tape sensor) and FF, REW and Play all seem to work - supply and takeup spindles move in the right direction, capstan, etc.

So I noticed when I hit play with a tape in, the takeup side starts to move but stops. So I spooled a little bit of tape inside the shell and the play side plays that fine and then stops as soon as the supply side has to move. Which led me to think that perhaps there is something with the supply reel side. Of course that might explain FF and play but not REW.

I was considering taking apart the supply reel assembly (RXA-563) and takeup reel assembly (RXA-560) but I'm not sure if that makes sense and I'm frankly not sure what to do once I take them apart.

Any help would be appreciated.

Couple questions to help narrow it down. Can you apply light pressure to the idlers to check if it's a pressure issue? It could also be low motor torque, have you opened/cleaned/lubricated the motor and all the transport bits? How about voltage to the motor, is it correct/consistent?
 
No I haven't done any of those things but now I have something to do!

A couple of questions though:
- by light pressure to the idlers do you mean actually pressing on the idler arm assembly (attached to the spring?) while operating?
- I have not opened the motor up and couldn't find any info on lubricating / cleaning it on the web / service manual. Any links or specifics you could point me to?
- I did lubricate where the motor shaft connects to the flywheel per WJOE instructions.
- I measured the voltage at the motor when not in Play and got 12.4 and it dropped to 12.2 when playing - does that seem within a normal range?

I did try another experiment. Since I have another 8282 that works, I put it into play without a cassette inserted with the cassette sensor switch actuated and then I tried spinning the supply side reel - it spun freely. When I did the same thing on the deck I'm working on it did NOT spin freely.

That's your problem in a nutshell. It's been a long time since I've been into one of these, but it sounds like the brake is locked up. The thing is, the brake in those is usually the plate assembly that the heads move on. I'd check to see if something didn't "pop-out" in reassembly. Something must be rubbing on that wheel.

Edit: Nope. The 8282 uses a reel spindle braking solenoid, operated through D805.

It's hard to see from the exploded diagram which lever is the brake, because it's spread out over many pages. But if you look closely at the mechanism, you should be able to see a little arm, (probably with a rubber "foot" on it), that hits the side of the supply reel, with a solenoid on the other end. Either way, you should download the manual from HiFiEngine.

The "green" lever looks like the brake lever. But the diagram isn't clear as to what solenoid actuates it. (Pulls it away.) The spring provides braking pressure. The braking "foot" is opposite the spring end.

OK the Brakes were indeed to key to solving it. I had no less than 3 issues and after your reply Artie, I realized I had to understand how the braking works. Turns out there was a solenoid that sits on the subassembly that is also the mount for the rewind motor. That solenoid lifts both of the brakes in REW and FF. The brakes are attached to a yoke that is sits on top of the solenoind arm.

So my first problem was that there is a spring (RBH-233) on the brake yoke. That spring had come off on one end - quick fix. That got playback working.

Next up I realized one of the wires that supply power to the solenoid had come unsoldered - also quick.

Finally, I figured out that the arm attached to the solenoid (RXA-579) has to sit between the bottom of the yoke and on top of the infamous FF idler (RXA-581). When all of those guys were assembled correctly, with power to the solenoid, all the transport functions starting working.

I hope this helps someone else - definitely took me a few hours to sort out.
