Pioneer Rt-909 score

I picked up a 909 that has great cosmetics but needs some work. Came with pioneer nab hubs and pick up reel. Have to replace the belt and see of it works. Looks like I can get a service manual free off the net.

What is the best oil to lube it up with?

Oh that is nice. If you have to dig into the internals there is a lot of useful threads on here from replacing belts to full restorations and tips.

Let us know your progress with pics of course. :D
 
Nice looking..... hope the heads are OK etc. Belt...:scratch2: I thought the 909 had seperate reel motors. Not sure about that... never owned one. My brother had one new when we were Much younger :D I love the cool looking blue lights at night :smoke: Enjoy:thmbsp:
 
Nice machine - you will love it! Use a good quality synthetic lube - type in reel-to-reel on Ebay and you'll find any number of lube kits available.

The 909 has monstrous reel motors that spin reels at a dizzying speed. Unlike some of the newer more logic-friendly machines like Teac X-2000R or Akai GX-747, you need to keep an eye on the counter and "plan ahead"!

Belts for counter and the other capstan (dual capstan machine). Three motors in all.
 
Heads look good to me after a quick inspection. I have a belt on the way from ebay. Started to read a thread on restoration. Looks like I will be very busy with this one.

Anyone else ever try super fast rewind (or FF) with their X2000?? I occasionally will need to "get it done now" and place tape from tension arm to tension arm
ONLY and stand back!!! Toggling between FF (or RW) and STOP towards the very end to slow things down. VERY effective - but NOT to be done when storing that tape.:thumbsdn:
 
Saw a 909 on CL once that was a few miles away. Came with enough maxwell tapes to make the $250 cost equal to nothing if you flipped the reels on ebay. I wish the seller had contacted me but apparently I was too late.

My older brother had a 909 in a tall Pioneer rack new back then. I always liked it as it had good sound and the blue lights were cool to watch at night.:smoke:
He got his rack when Dad and I brought home the Cornwalls and the Revox R2R I have now. I wish my Brother would kept that Pioneer rack I always wanted one. Maybe next year when the car is paid off I will start buying the vintage Pioneer one piece at a time. Use it in the guest bedroom that is seldom used now that the kids are grown. Shame you missed that 909 and all the tape. I like Maxell UD/XL... my reel on the tape swap is a Maxell UD/XL mastering tape. Hope you like the tape, I think you have it now.:music:
 
The hubs and reel would probably cost me more on ebay than the purchase price of this unit. I already have a bunch of maxell tape to play with.

I also have a Revox A77 and a Teac A-6300. Looking forward to see how the Pioneer stacks up against them.

Waiting for the belt to arrive before I dig into it.

I'm getting ready to restore the one I have. How are your rollers? They are know to get gummy. I made the mistake of only ordering 1 roller (thinking it was a set) when Pioneer still offered them, have to ship the other to Terry's. I also just got in a new test tape, so if you don't have one, make a trip up the Cajon Pass when you are ready and get her adjusted.

What city are you located in? My rollers are not gummy yet and look pretty good to me. The belt looks like black tar.

Okay, i put the new belt on but i have a problem. When you put the unit in play the reels spin in opposite directions. Left goes counter clockwise and the right goes clockwise? FF and RW works like it should. Anybody have an idea where to start?
 
When in play the take up reel should take up the tape
The feed reel should put back tension on the tape so it does not spill out on the floor.

The pinch rollers/capstans control the tape speed in play and the reels should go in opposite directions.

Now what you described is not what I would think the reels should do. The belt is for the capstans so I don't think that will be the problem. Good luck with it.

Is this when you have a tape correctly threaded??
 
It is working fine. With no tape loaded, the reel tables will spin in different directions for exactly the reason stated earlier, back tension. It looks weird with no tape, but trust me, it's fine. Load up a reel and try it and you'll see. Unless someone has meddled with the motor adjustment pots, all should be well.
 
They free-spin in opposite directions because one motor needs to keep back tension on the tape. As was stated this is normal operation without any tape loaded.

But it seems to **me** the OP got the directions reversed, no? :yes: (it's also normal operations WITH tape loaded - correct?)

How can the reels go in opposite directions with a tape mounted ?
