I managed to pick one of these up this week. Cannot believe my luck! After a good clean its gone from dull and tired to an almost mirror shine with an amazing sound too! 
I'm thinking of going through and giving it a recap, as well as replacing a lot of the important resistors that are getting that baked clay look.
I'm sure I can do all of that without much issue - as well as replacing the trimmers as recommended by some of the top AKers here.
My last question is about the display. I've heard and read a lot about the VFDs in the x800 series going south - one of the reasons I've been hesitant in acquiring one. This one looks okay... but the centre is starting to fade a little compared to the edges.
I've read a lot of posts where MTF talks about making a voltage regulator to help increase the life on the VFD and I wanted to add this to this one to help increase its life - however long or short its going to be. But I haven't found a thread or post that deals with a set of components that are concrete enough to work and where exactly to mount them etc.
Can anyone help clear this up? I'm pretty sure I can build it. Just as soon as I understand exactly what I need to do. I guess the one on the 8800 will be simpler than the 9800 as this doesn't seem to have a bright/dim setting for the display.
