Pioneer SA-9500II Restoration/Overhaul

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Picked this up a couple of months ago and have been making steady progress fixing it up. Listing said it "survived" a housefire. I made it my mission to make sure that ended up being true. I got it for about $150 +shipping.

I ended up tearing it all the way down to clean all the soot out of it. Wooo, I love IPA and Simply Green, just don't love smelling like 'em. Took a lot of work and toothbrushes to get these looking alright. Found a lot of work in here that must have come from before this thing was in a house fire. I'm pretty new to this, with only two other receivers under my belt before this one, including the SX-950 in the background of some of these pictures. Whoever was in here before really didn't know what they were doing, even to my eyes. Anyways, got it all back together, rewired it up following the Model KU schematics for a little too long before realizing I had a Model S. Stalled out for a bit around here, not realizing I had missed a grounding wire. Got everything finished up yesterday, plugged it in, and had some humming coming out of the right channel. Went to investigate and found that one of the wires had broken off, connecting to the collector of an output transistor. Poked it with a probe without remembering to turn the receiver off, and caused a short. Oops, o_O I have the $3.50 of replacement parts coming in the mail and should have it sorted out by this time next week. Anyway, I wanted to share a success story on a board that usually has people needing help with disasters. The cat is a pretty decent shophand, so he gets included in the progress picks. Haven't seen a recently updated BOM for the SA-9500II on here. I can throw together my list if that's something people would find useful.

That's an extremely challenging project - and some very impressive work. I've used Simple Green numerous times to wash out dust and grime but never to remove smoke residue from a housefire. My primary concern was getting water into the small transformer wireway holes, and also into the large volume control, so I covered them as best as I could. I also found that water tends to enter glass fuses so they needed to be replaced. I'm sure you're aware that housefire smoke residue is conductive, so anywhere it was deposited but not completely removed is a potential problem.
 
Thank you Shikaka! I found supporting info about using either for removing soot, so I gave both a shot. My preference is toward the 99% IPA after this experience. I pulled each board out entirely to work on separately, so I didn't think to cover the volume pot. That is a good point though, I'll keep that in mind for future projects. Removing the soot was the biggest time sink. AWF-024 sits component side down, and I did end up having to pull everything off the board to get it clean. I ended up doing a full diode sweep out of frustration before finding the missing ground. Didn't know that about the glass fuses but it makes sense, thanks for the info
