Price seems a bit steep, but it's tough to say. You might get close to that on eBay, but from the seller's standpoint, not after they strip their fees....

Wow price doesn't seem that high to me if the condition is really as good as mentioned. That's the real trick, although at least here one could determine that before forking over the cash, versus buying on eBay or Audiogon or such.

I have owned a 9191, still own a PL-530, and a 1250 rather than 1050, but that combination would make a nice rig!

And just for the record since I am dissenter here, I have absolutely no connection to that sale/listing/seller. I just think that seems a decent, not great, price for that gear in that condition.

What you have to remember here is that "most" people here got sets just like that for $25 at the local thrift store.

If the condition is what they look like in the pictures and as described, that looks like a good deal to me. A lot of times, because the original boxes look good and are present, that equipment could have sat in those boxes for the last 20+ years or so.

I'd venture to guess that the seller built in a little bargaining room.

I really wouldn't be interested in the cassette deck either, but a vintage receiver and matching turntable that nice are worth something - if nothing else for not having to work on it.

Also, while I don't collect boxes either, from the looks of that equipment it likely spent most of it's life in them.

So what makes this gear different from all the rest is that it's almost NOS. It will end up on an office cadenza soon.

Everyone knows the original boxes don't matter to the sound of the equipment, but thanks for pointing out the obvious. The "real" collectors know the value of having all original equipment, original boxes and original manuals. Just watch an episode or two of American Pickers, Storage Wars, or Pawn Stars and you'll see what I'm talking about. So go ahead and buy the beat up thrift store equipment that usually doesn't work and save the "real collectables" for the collectors, you'll continue to make them very happy with your decision. :yes:

Perfect for the person that wants to refurb some old thrift store junk and listen to it for full enjoyment of the audio experience. There is room for both in the hobby, the collector and the bottom feeder.

For that money, I would be buying different gear but I would like the boxes and all the extras that came with the unit. Don't know how much I would pay for it, but I would not be searching it out for big bucks on the bay. The $200 SX-1980 box and packing (only) on the bay is for someone else.

Even if this gear is in great condition with all the packing, manuals and such, I'm still thinking it is a bill or two too high. But it will be market correct in a year or so as this hobby grows. So there may well be some upside to this bit of kit.

I'm not a Tape Deck guy either, but in the condition that one is in, if it works, which I'm sure it probaby does, I think it would bring at least $250 to a collector on eBay. So now you can deduct that $250 from the total and bring it down to $635 for the mint SX-1050 and PL-530, which IMHO, would be a great deal.

And you're right, there is room for the cheapskate, student rebuilder, and the collector, so all is good.
