Pioneer SP-BS22-LR, the real deal or hype?

Initially replaced by KEF Coda 7 as my computer speakers and now Boston A40 which are awesome too. The Codas now moved to my main listening area since they are just nice to listen to in every regard with a slight edge on the A40.
 
Well, here we are in time, 12/27/2021
My Dayton B652 Airs are with my Son in law doing monitor duty on his edit room desk. My Pioneer BS22’s have now been mated to a Cambridge Audio AXA 35 amp in my 10’x11’ study. The combo has resulted in an amazingly good sounding system. Unfortunately Pioneer has dropped out of the high fi market, so if you want a BS22 system you have a search on your hands, possibly the Bay.

Just picked up a pair of psb 300 bookshelf speakers a few months ago and wow those are awesome compared to many other speakers that I have/had including the pioneers. The PSBs are smoother and have much higher sensitivity at the 6 ohm impedance rating and sounds good even with a chip t-amp that I use in my office system.. Your Cambridge amp is quite highly rated so it would make sense that it would also sound good with many different speakers.
 
The Cambridge is so clean sounding, I would love to see it mated with speakers like the Klipsch Forte IV. Can't fit them or afford them, but I bet the combo would sound great!
 
Putting really good power on the Pioneers seems to reap benefits. I have an Adcom amp with 125 wpc running them and they really do well with this. I should say I soldered all of the interior connections in the Pioneers.
 
BTW, for anyone interested. I picked up another pair of bs22 on the cheap. I compared them to my “modded” pair and was pleasantly surprised. The modded pair have more air and the highs are more present than the stock pair.

All I did was solder all the interior connections directly so there are no wire compression connectors. It’s a circuit that does less harm to the signal I guess.

The hardest part was soldering wire to the interior side of the speaker post, there is probably a trick to that. I deformed the binding post cup a little on the one side, but it sounds fine.

Thought I'd give a little more CPR to this thread... :smoke:

A couple of weeks ago I hooked up an idle Kenwood 917 tuner to my Scott 399 Receiver which plays into some BS-22's. Result = very musical.
 
So I recently swapped in some Totem Acoustic Rainmakers in place of the PIoneers. I didn't care for the results, and it just goes to show you that system and speaker synergy matter. Those Rainmakers do thrash the Pioneers in other comparisons I've made, and placement may have been a contributing factor. The speakers are located on a shelf about a foot above my ear level, and one speaker is corner loaded. The Rainmakers had just too much bass for this location.
