Pioneer SX-1010 Relay Problem.

Hello everyone. I have a pioneer sx 1010 that I've done a tune up to recently. I cleaned and lubed all the switches, put in a new relay, and replaced all the lights with LEDs. I have a strange problem that happened before and continues to happen after I replaced the relay. Once every couple day, while I am listening to the 1010 for about 3 seconds the relay will click off and click back on. I have not been able to replicate this issue what so over. It will only do it once and then won't do it again. It sometimes goes 5 -10 days without doing it. I have no idea what this issue could be. I am confident that I can get to the bottom of this with the help of all you experts!

Quick thing to add. I have just purchased a rebuild kit for the 1010 on eBay that contains everything I need to rebuild this thing
 
I didn't know if it had come loose and was shorting.

Have you checked the biase & offset? IIRC the offset is one thing that will trip the protection circuit. Also look for possible shorts in your speaker wires, if they are just barely touching, maybe a single strand of wire escaped the terminals, this will trip the protection. Hopefully it's something simple.

I'll take a look. First order of business is I'm going to install new speaker wire, second check DC offset and bias
 
the timing of the off period is the biggest clue. IS it off for the same time period as it waits to kick in when powering up the unit?
If NOT (thus it's faster) then it is the relay drive transistor that's dropping out the relay, whereas if it takes the time delay time off, then something is triggering the protect circuit into operation and the relay is doing as ordered by the transistor.

Hi mark! Thanks for the response! What do you mean is it off for the same amount of time? It doesn’t happen often. I think it’s a lose connection (speaker wire) every 10 days while playing music the relay will click off for a second then come right back on. I think its just a lose connection.

Hi mark! I just realized what you meant. It’s off for the same amount of time that it would take for the relay to click on when powering up the unit.

Me too! sadly I don’t know if this fixed the issue. As the issue only happens once every couple days. It’s gone as long as 10 to 12 days before doing it. And when it does all that happens is the relay clicks off and then comes back on. It takes the same amount of time for the relay to turn back on as it does for the relay to engage when starting the unit up.

Mark, so what could be the issue then? If it does come back in the same amount of time that it takes the relay when the unit powers up. I definitely had the speaker wire shorting out, but I’m not sure that this would cause it to happen once in blue moon. Its working right now and is singing beautifully. Hopefully fixed the issue. I also adjusted the dc offset to 0 on both channels.
 
It's being TOLD to go into protect when the delay meets the timing criteria.
And whatever caused it to go into protection goes away quickly so it doesn't STAY in protection.

Ya gotta catch it in the act. It's the hardest thing to nail.

Could shorting out speaker wire cause this?
 
I think I know what eBay seller you are referring to.
I wasn’t sure if it was components based on Matt’s restoration thread or MTF’s list.
My feeling is, to rebuild the tone control and the amps. Complete transistor replacement.
Make sure to reflow all solder connections. This makes you look at the whole board.

That makes sense. I just don’t want to fix what’s not broken. I don’t go easy on my 1010. I listen to it pretty much all day everyday. It seems very reliable. Why should I recap it now?
