Pioneer SX-1980 recap and restoration thread!

Yes, I know. The MY2 has a rated load of 5 amps per contact and by my calculations the 1980 at 270 watts output into 8 ohms is 5.8 amps.

Well, the current rating is the ability to break a DC load. The AC (music) carry-current is much higher than the 5Adc rating.

Yes, you are right, I had forgotten that. The carry rating on it is 10 amps, so that's better then the 5 amps.

Very nice! Keep posting pictures as you go along.

The sx 1980 has eluded me for some time.............just can't seem to find one for my collection. Unless of course you pay a ba-zillion bucks!

Jim's SX-1250 is done and will be shortly on it's way to him, so I can now get to this monster. :thmbsp::D Before pics of the boards being recapped to come shortly, I'm going to be starting on it later this afternoon.

Good luck with shipping...Matt who are you using to ship the 1250? I just shipped an 850 that was packed for war but UPS had their way with it. The person has to send it back to me for further repair and another shipment. Good Luck!

If you don't mind me butting in here . . . a few months ago I got a SX-1280 back from another member . . . It got crushed and lucky for me Matt was able to semi straighten out the chassis.

And from then on I made what Matt calls: "Jim's Coffin."

My UPS man hates it and we joke about my "coffin" . . . but so far so good.

Awesome, plywood outside, Styrofoam inside?

double boxed, with plenty of styrofoam, still got crushed.

My big mistake: I marked all over the outside "Fragile!" "Electronics!"

My UPS guy told me (later) that that was a real bad move.

That is ridiculous!! I wished they would hold people accountable for damaging these beautiful goods!

Next up, the biggest and hardest board of them all, the power supply board, then the two amp boards and then it will be time to rock and roll!

Power supply board after (Note: I miscounted the caps in the list for this board I created and came up two short, so you can see two caps that are still original, I've got those on order. I edited the OP with the added caps)

Coming up, power up and first impressions of the recapped sound! Also cleaning and polishing it as well!

I like to replace those two axial caps at the left with radial caps to get them out from under the heatsink. And the 35V zener should be replaced with a series pair of 18V and 17V zeners (suggested by Pioneer in one of their service bulletins). Then you experiment with large value resistors in parallel with R222 and R223 to tweak in the voltage to the desired 80V.
