Pioneer SX-950 Phono Section

The volume level on both phono sections of an SX-950 have very low signal input. I have to turn the volume level to over 50% to get to a low listening level similar to other inputs at 25%. Any insight into a specific cause?

Can an external phono section be used and plugged into the existing phono to boost the signal? I know under normal circumstances this is a no-no.

I already have quite a bit into this unit. If it's a major issue I may have to let it go.

Both the +28, Pin 6, and -19, Pin 2, voltages OK?

You could use a external if desired. But I'd say fix what's there.

If power supply voltages are good, I'd make sure it's not dirty switches, or your turntable.
However, all transistors used in the phono amp are known to go leaky/noisy.

I'm a bit of a newbie. What should the voltage readings be? I have read a few other threads that the phono section is a fairly easy board to work on. Would replacing all caps/resistors most likely take care of the problem? I just had it worked on. Had both right and left channels go out prior to this

After taking a look at the service manual I see what you are asking. I haven't measured anything yet.

not the turntable. Been using with other amps without issue.

It is unusual for both channels to go bad at the same time, that's why the above posts are directly you to things that are common between left and right. Have they both 'faded' in sync. or has one gone bad, and then the other?

well....not that one had to do with the other but here's my current issue SX-950 left channel fried when I dropped the needle!! TWICE!
