I aquired a mint Pioneer SX-9930 for free a while back and had it serviced. It works really well and sounds amazing! I was told by multiple people that it is a very rare receiver (being a European version of the SX-939) in the US. Do you guys have any thoughts on it? I'll try to include some photos of it later on tonight.

Looks like a beauty. I really like the black face Pio receivers. What are you listening through and what do you think of it's performance?

I'm currently using a pair of Boston CR95 tower speakers coupled with a pair of Phase Technology Teatro 4.5 bookshelf speakers with the matching Power 8 subwoofer. not the best setup, but still sounds amazing to my ears :music:
 
That's a great model (SX-939) and a pretty and rare version. I'd love to have one myself.

Thanks for the comment! I'm extremely happy to have this receiver and good luck with your hunt! Do you only prefer the 939 or would you have either?
 
I'm looking for either, but I guess I'd prefer the Euro model for it's different looks.
 
The 9930 (939) along with the 7730(737) and 5530 were black face paneled multivoltage units that were sold ONLY in the EUROPEAN U.S. Military P.X. (Post Exchange). They were meant for military personnel and not to be sold to the indigenous population. There were also black panel versions in the SX-x50 (SX-5560,5570,5580,& 5590 or SX-750-950-1050-1250) series. They are NOT considered European models as they were only sold in the P.X. to military personnel. The reason for the Multi-voltage transformers was that Military personnel were transferred all over the world and it alleviated having to purchase step-down or step up transformers and adapters for every different duty station.

Dr. Strangelove did a paper on this subject about 8-10 years ago. He had contacts in West Germany and other locations in Europe, and Asia (namely Japan, and possibly Guam), and the general consensus was pretty much what I posted above.

Apparently none of these units made an appearance in any of the product catalogs. And brochures, sales spec sheets, etc., were almost non existant. I've never seen anything on them except for one sheet for the 5530-7730-9930 back in 1974-75.

Internally the Black Face unit and it's Silver Face parent are identical except for the power supply. (unless you have a Multi-voltage Silver Face).

Of the two (939 and 9930) right now I'd prefer the 939 as I can read small stuff better on a light background. Back when it came out, I would have taken the 9930.
