Great combination: I always liked Pioneer tape decks with TDK tape. Still have to pair the right deck with the right TDK series though-
AR = Acoustic Response (I think the AR-X was the finest Type I Normal tape I ever tried)
AD = Acoustic Dynamic
MA = Metal Alloy (the MA-XG 90 in a Pioneer Elite CT-07D is a beautiful thing)
SA = Super Avilyn
SF= Super Fidelity
D = Dynamic
also SD, SR, HX,....

My Technics Dual tape deck, RS-TR212, was/is ill-suited to the Metal Alloy. Sings with the SA cassettes. Can't remember the Pioneer model number deck I had, wasn't TOTL, maybe 3 down? Anyway, was iffy with the MA. IIRC, the bias adjustment wasn't broad enough to get to the MA. Several years ago I transferred many tapes to FLAC.
Old story... In 9th grade I finally noticed a good friend's dad had a thousand albums, mostly Jazz with a mix of bluegrass and regional, many on 78rpm. Their house was the usual small 3 bedroom, small kitchen, small living room, 1 bath. The two boys shared a room. The 3rd room was an office/music room. No way to "hide" any activities. His dad was a grinch and VERY possessive of everything and in no uncertain terms told both of us to stay the heck out of his office and under no circumstances play his albums nor touch his stereo. Have no idea now what equipment he had other than it had the WOW factor.
Needless to say, anytime the house was empty we hooked up my cassette deck and recorded an album or two. My deck lived at their house for months. Must have made sixty 90 minute cassettes off his material. I cherished those, particularly the ones made from recordings from the 20s and 30s.
The only other cassettes I had faith in were the high bias Maxells. Was a TDK guy from the beginning and probably in large part due to ads such as this!

Here`s a 3-page Pioneer ad from around 1980....first time I ever eyeballed the RT-707, it went on my "gotta have it" list....that didn`t materialize for a few years, but I always held onto that ad for inspiration....
