PL-570 Restoration

That was a great suggestion. I measured the inner spline diameter and it is smaller (2mm) than that of the main shaft (3mm). So it would be too small to fit in the current bore (3mm). Only two way is to reprint them with 4mm bore (which would fit the sleeve) or 2mm which would fit the inner spline.
Going to try opening the bore to 4mm with a Dremel. If that doesnt work out well, will try to print again. Thanks!
 
Been a while I was away from this project. But here I am with new gear with 4mm bore. Printed out at a local 3D maker and it fits right in.
I cleaned up the tonearm movement assembly and put new lube in.

Now I see the motor turning when I press START!

But the thing is the tonearm doesn't move. I am wondering if the tonearm pin is in the right location or not?
This is where it is now. Should it be on the other side?

You have the link between the white gear and the tone arm actuator plate installed wrong. You need to disconnect the link, rotate the plate under the tonearm counterclockwise about 180 degrees, (so the pin is on the other side), and reattach the link so the attachment is on the other side of the plate under the arm. This makes the plate rotate in the opposite direction during the cycle.

Thanks, I am bit unclear with your instructions but I rotated the white gear to align with the slots. Please see here -

However, the gear now stops after rotating about 90 deg.


The hook was not latching to the tonearm because it was in wrong position. I have fixed that but now the white gear is not turning full rotation.
 
The link between the white gear and the plate under the arm is installed incorrectly. The link should be on the other side of the pivot point of the arm. Remove it at one end or the other, rotate the plate under the arm counterclockwise about 45 degrees, and reattach the link. After this, the plate under the arm will rotate in the opposite direction when the auto system is activated, and everything should work.

I assume that -

B - white gear

Which letters are you referring to as link, plate under the arm, arm and pivot point?

Remove one end or the other of A, Rotate D about 45 degrees counterclockwise, reconnect A. This will put arm A on the other side of the pivot point of D, which will make D turn the opposite direction when A is moved to the left by the cam groove in B.
 
Did you get the mechanism properly assembled so that "D" turns in the correct direction?
 
Hi Bob, finally got some time tonight. When A is removed on the other side and D is rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise, the pin on A would be out of the groove on B.
I also found this image in PL-570 service manual. It seems A is between the spring and the link arm C.

OK you are correct, I was incorrect (sorry). It looks like something is jamming plate D so it cannot turn clockwise. Did you take the mechanism apart at plate D? Could the stack of plates at D be misassembled? In operation, the little foam pad on the arm at the top of the photo is what moves the arm back to the rest, by pressing on the pin above F. You need to see what is keeping D from turning clockwise. Once you get it all working, the arm will likely not quite reach the rest at shut off. You will need to replace that little piece of foam rubber with a thicker piece if that is the case.

No worries. The whole auto start mechanism was disassembled and fresh new lube and oil. Re-aligned the arms and gears accordingly to SM.
And viola! It works!


I just need to adjust the arm drop location.

Well the arm drop location is adjusted easily but now I found out auto return or repeat doesn't work. :confused:

On to these functions..... It seems like the SM direction on adjustment is pretty confusing

Not sure what the min value in step 2 ...
Does it mean when I rotate VR101 completely counter clockwise it needs to read 1V?

Hello

I have tried to recap the auto return detector board PWX-011. And follow the adjustment procedure. However, I could still not get the return to work.
The return would work sometimes, when the tone arm is moved back and forth a little at the record end location.

If memory serves me, there is an LED that shines through a grating that moves in front of a photo detector, when the arm is at the end of the record. It seem to me I remember changing the led because the setup could not be completed due to insufficient brightness of the LED.I am not sure though, as this is just from memory.
 
Great job! I found it interesting because a few years ago I followed a thread where a guy kept printing 3D gears for a Pioneer PL-50 but they were too soft and wouldn't work. Maybe the process has improved since then.

It seems to me that I just replaced it with a stock LED from my large assortment. Please bear with me, as this is from memory (I don't keep notes). Isn't the LED just a standard red visible one? What I remember is a 3mm or 5mm standard red LED, but I may be thinking about a different model turntable:crazy:
 
That is not the system I was remembering. I must have been thinking about a different model turntable:crazy:
