Yep! I remember them from my days in Kali-forn-aye-eh. I think that's what Pacific stereo was referring to above, too.

What I'm wondering is not just about the sanitation of the production facilities --that can be taken care of with some investment. But what stylus do you use to play these back on, if you plan to eat them afterward? Most styli are not exactly hygienically sterile. Also, what mat do you use? If I were manufacturing/selling these, I would include something like a protective waxed-paper slipmat, to keep both the mat and the chocolate clean.

Chocolate is relatively soft compared even to vinyl, even in a dark, hard formulation; I doubt these will survive many playings without some serious sonic degradation. Obviously, sticking your record in the fridge or freezer between playings will help it last a lot longer. Leave it in your car on a hot day, and instead of needledrops, you'll be making needle-drips!

I found it amusing that before he settled on Chocolate, he tried other materials, including ICE CREAM and BUTTER! You'd have to be a little :screwy: to think things that soft and perishable would work. Maybe if you had a dry-ice-cooled platter...

Anyway, I'm surprised this hasn't been done before; I vaguely thought it had been done years ago, and in fact I think I saw such a thing once, in a 7" size. That may have been a chocolatier's decorative creation, though, and not actually playable.

Not surprising that the Japanese would be interested in this; it would fit their culture and market best of all, I think.

It would be quite nice if you could record a personal message and have that put on a customized chocolate record. Imagine the Valentine's Day sales!
