Playing It Loud

Humor me and I'll promise to go away soon. Dunno why, but I've had fun posting lately. Just as sound is made of cycles, this frequent posting is also a cycle and will ebb. OK, so I did search first, thinking the subject has to already exist.

Rather than creating a poll, I'd enjoy knowing what works for you. Do you enjoy and is good (or bad) quality, loud, music important? Hey, some guys enjoy ANY kind of loud tunes.

Some of us may occasionally enjoy higher dBs, but it's not a necessity for you or your system. Not that it matters, but providing the music and system sounds good to me, I enjoy loud music sometimes. In fact, good, loud and good bass have always been part of the mix - it's that important, even though LOUD comprises only ~10% of my listening. I've saved my $$ until a loud system was possible, rather than getting something less.

How important is good sounding, but loud, music to you? Depending upon the tunes, 90dB is roughly the threshold of the loud zone for my son, friends, and me. My wife thinks that's too loud but will stand in front of a live band or go to >110dB concerts and movie theaters. 100dB rocks nicely and 110 is my limit. Noticeable distortion is not allowed at any level.

I suspect my preferences are the minority party, but I'm curious about what does it for AK members? Did you spend more to have a loud system? What's your loud range? How often do you like loud? Thanks for participating.

My systems will play louder than I ever listen. I haven't measured db levels, so I can't put numbers on it. I figure as long as it sounds clean at my very highest play-back levels, then it will handle my usual levels with ease. Both my systems sound good at low levels, which is actually more important to me.
 
When I'm seriously listening it's at around 90db, maybe a touch more, and I'm in my "listening seat".
I don't use my system for background music very often.But when I do, it's usually at lower levels and I'm usually in a different room, and sometimes it sounds "better".
Weird.
 
I like it loud. I've never been to a quiet concert, but I've been to quite a few. I don't listen at concert levels, but it's comfortably loud enough to feel. I've never picked up a db meter or SPL app, it's just not that important to me.
 
Occasionally (I'm sure my neighbours appreciate my restraint:rolleyes:) when I'm doing something elsewhere in the house,I like to crank it to the point where you'd think the band was playing live in the living room.

I played mine at 113dB to see if it would do it. It did and, the clip indicators flickered on an amp rated at 440WPC at 4 ohms. Flickering means 'getting close to clipping', from what I read in the manual. They didn't stay on solid. Still, 113dB at listening position is way too loud to actually listen for any amount of time, but it was fun to see if it'd go really loud. I do think it's pretty cool to watch the subwoofer's driver when playing music with pipe organs having lots of deep bass at higher levels. The funny part was seeing all the dust removed from the driver while doing this!
 
It depends largely on what you are listening to. Some music was intended to be loud (some even direct the listener to turn it up).
Next would be the system, followed by environment. I listen to too much music to play it loud all the time.
I guess loud is a relative term as well. Too loud is when the wife is yelling "dinner's ready" from upstairs and I can't hear her. ;)
 
i know mine will do more than 100db as i have measured
i like loud sometimes and luv that i can do obnoxious loud and it till sounds great
have you noticed that with adequate power loud is still clean and dosnt seem that loud, even tho you know it is
 
I used to when I was in my younger years but not now. Until recently because of a move a necessary downsizing I had Altec 19s in an accommodating room with 300 watts per to power them and they would do real loud and clean... don't have a db meter but I know loud when I hear it and they would do effortless loud, depending on the source and type of music one could easily imagine a live performance... think Money for Nothing or Tin Pan Alley... maybe Leonard Cohen, depending.... or one of my favorites with that set up, Stormy Monday by Bobby Blue Bland... at volume, just like being there.
 
I do enjoy it loud pretty often. 85 to 90 db is nice. But the more cocktails, always seems to effect the volume.
Before you know it your into 100db area. My Electro Voice Sentry iii's seem to like it there, and I don't argue.
 
On my main system which I usually listen to on Saturday nights with my fellow audio buddy, I like to turn it up to a decent level. Just to the point that the music has good impact but not so loud that you start to get overwhelmed. Of course it depends on the type of music being played too.
