Please dont kick me off AK for this

To revive this old thread, I too have a pair of 8320's. I inherited them, I believe they are from around 1985-1987 or so. I have been thinking of replacing them with something better, but then again, would it be worth it? They are in mint shape. My only gripe is the tweeters are WAY too strong. There is a tweeter attenuator dial on the front and I run them at -5 (-6 is the lowest). Set them to anywhere more than -4 (they go up to +6) and you might as well be trying to break glass. So, given I run them at -5 they sound pretty good. Nice tight bass, but the overall sound they put out can get muddy at times.

Wow.
I just picked up a pair of 8320s today at GW. Lp Mike, you described the MCS 8320 almost exactly as I do. I keep the tweeter at around -6, but I only noticed a slight muddiness on some of my more poorly compressed mp3 files(around 128kbps).

They are very decent speakers IMHO.

I have those in my 1979 catalog. 10" 3-way bass reflex, with +/- 3db tweeter adjustment pad. They were second from the bottom in the line that year. Specs listed include:

10" woofer with15 oz. magnet
5 1/4" cone midrange with 11.7 oz. magnet
2 1/2" cone tweeter with 1.71 oz. magnet

5/8" thick cabinets
power handling 10-50 watts 8ohm
crossover at 600hz & 4000hz

I hope this helps,
Rob

I have a set of three way MCS speakers that look good and sound good. They are not a competition for my Timeframes, but they were worth the price.

MCS brand had quite a few good products. The tend to be overlooked by audio snobs because they were sold by JC Penny.

I just scored a pair of 8320s at a Salvation Army for $25. One is missing the grill, but the other grill is mint. I also scored a Definitive Mythos 7 center channel and a Definitive 10 inch Powerfield powered subwoofer. They were paired together for $25!!!!!! The center speaker alone is on Crutchfield for $399 still in stock! But I digress..back to the 8320s, it was late before I got home so I haven't listened to them yet. I noticed there is a small pin hole in one of the woofer surrounds, but otherwise the surrounds look fine. What would you guys recommend I do for the pinhole?

My crime is that I went out looking for and succeded in finding a pair of MCS speakers.
As some may know I have been looking for the honeycomb tweeters for my technics SB6 speakers for quite some time. After a whole lot of research I found that the higher end MCS stuff was made by technics. Yesterday while out hunting I stumbled onto a pair of MCS 8290's at a pawn shop, had the guy fire them up and $22 later I was now and owner of these speakers ( they are actually quite nice speakers in their own right). Got them home did the swap out and low and behold they were technics honeycomb tweeters, pefrect size and even have the guide pin on the back mounting plate. Now I have the subject of much obsession fixed and complete. pictures and a write up will follow but right now they are not set up properly and are dirty as sin.
Ok just one.
Sorry but Technics did not build anything for MCS (jc Penney) but Technics more hi end HiFi was built by same company that built MCS and that company was then called Nikko Electric and is now Nikko Electronics

Can you please elaborate - with links & documentation to prove Technics was not involved with some MCS pieces? My Technics made MCS turntables, amps, tuners, cassette decks, and EQs are suddenly having an identity crisis.

Service manuals for these pieces all reference being made by MAT (Matsushita, parent company of Technics) - not Nikko Electric. And no MCS documentation I have ever mentions Nikko Electric.

Same here. The drivers in my MCS 8332 are stamped Technics on the back. It is past time for me to refoam and recap these speakers.
