Sounds like you pretty much got it--from me and others. You are absolutely right--research, research, research. Ask questions here (and other forums if you participate). Dollars and Sense is the place to ask questions of value if you find something that you think you might like, but don't know if it's a steal or deal. There are also a lot of repair/restoration threads here, so you can find out if there are "known issues" with specific pieces of gear that might need to be addressed if you do go the used/vintage route (which I don't discourage at all--as I posted previously, most of my gear is OLD).
My advice FWIW is to get moved into your new digs with what you have and then see/hear what you think. A new room is a whole new "venue", and room/placement is a HUGE part of the equation with ANY gear. As I previously stated, your Polks are very competent speakers, but might be "volumetrically challenged" by the sheer physical volume of the space, so I would place a powered sub a little higher on the list of priorities.
Perhaps the MOST IMPORTANT piece of advice I can give you is to MAKE ONE CHANGE AT A TIME. If you do the "shotgun" approach and change a bunch of things all at once, you will have no idea what (if anything) actually made a positive difference. Set up what you have in the new space, tinker with it a bit, and THEN make a decision as to what you need to get to where you want to be.
