Polk audio sda-srs 2

$400 is a reasonably good price for those speakers, IMHO. I personally own a pair of those that, unfortunately, are in storage since I moved. I originally had SDA 1C's but with I came across the SRS II's for $200, well, enuff said. I've updated the crossovers in mine with Solen caps and Mills resistors plus changed out the tweeters to the RD0-194's. Yes, they really, really like whatever power you can run on them. When they are going, they run off of a Carver TFM-55 amp @ 380wpc. Before that one, they were on a 200wpc Carver M-1.0t plus I've used them on my 250wpc Soundcraftsmen A5002. You don't "have to" give them that much but don't even waste your time running them on a smallish vintage receiver. That would just not be right!!! Also make sure it is a common ground amp as these speakers have the IC cable between them, too. After that, it's all about the proper location and listening position then let them rip!

Enjoy them in their stock form, though, first. The "upgrades" don't have to be done. Let your ears decide that. If you like them the way they are, go with it.

Also, there are 2 iterations of the SRS II's. One version used the pin/pin connector and the other used the pin/blade for the IC connector.

well I got em and got em hooked up and WOW there pretty bangin, a little boomy when i cranked em but given current location in pretty much the corners of my 14' by 16' room was expecting that I don't think i'll need to look around for speakers or a sub anymore cept for another pair of B&W dm1400's. I'm loving these sl2000 tweets, the yammy m-70 seems pushes them loud enough for my needs. love having floor standers too all and all I'm quite thrilled with having sda's after only having the bug for a few months overall a major step up from the 10's and those are great well time to get back to my new sda srs 2's sn: 1550 & 1495
also im pretty sure they are pin/blade only defects are one of the binding posts is a bit chipped no biggie and a water stain from a non-coastered and ill placed drink
thanks to epi for getting me running and all other posters for the helpful polk sda insight anymore tips will be much appreciated

oh and sorry but I have no means to take pics of these 135 pound beasts

You guys give me too much credit. I just turn up the volume and see what happens.

$400 sounds like a great deal to me. The Polk board guys say the SRS 2 might be the best-sounding SDA model overall. 14x16' sounds like a usable room size. It's easily big enough for the minimum setup Polk recommends for these things.

Some people think the SL2000 has a bad peak in its response somewhere. It's popular right now to replace them with new Polk silk-domes. You get a discount if you join the Club Polk. My memory of the SL2000 is a little hazy since it's been a couple years since I've had my RTA-11Ts in my main system. Speaking of the 11Ts, it seems like Polk ownership follows a similar path for people, like you with your 10s. Own small Polks->buy big Polks (I now have 1.2TLs.)

Keep in mind you have to use an amp that's fully common-ground when you're using the SDA cable. Bridged amps or anything goofy like that will probably involve smoke being released.

man im loving Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros on these srs 2, oh and sadly and maybe luckily (cost saving on not buying another amp) these are the older non-bi-ampable version. love having gear that entered the world around the same time I did

You are right. The SL2000 tweeters are the bread and butter of the SDAs. Without them they would just be another pair of average speakers. Don't succumb to the hype that the replacement tweeters are any better unless you like dullness better than the live performance soundstage that you are experiencing now.

I love listening to songs with these things and hearing things i've never heard before. only upgrade i plan on doing for now is new binding posts http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=oem&content_id=10&pagestring=Patented+Binding+Posts
or http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=oem&pagestring2=Binding%20Posts&pagestring=Binding%20Posts+%28closeup%29&content_id=11&part_id=150 are the ones im thinking of any one here ever use the "Patented Binding Posts" heard one good review of em

how do you find the bass response? Is it boomy or is it sort of a midbass punchy tight sound? does the bass tend to fill the soundstage as well?

its was a wee bit boomy but after i moved em about 16" off the back wall they there has been none of that the midbass is quick and tight I listen to alot of techno and the speakers dont sound at all flabby or muddy as for the bass filling the sound stage well my room make for a small sound stage so even the 10's filled it fine but me loving the low end was still looking for a sub that could hit around 20hz but with these I have no need to look for a sub any longer. listening to BT- All that makes us human continues at around 150-200 watts a channel I could feel the bass notes eminent from the floor then rise up to about the chest level in sequence when the note changed all in all great so far oh and Tchaikovsky, 1812 Overture sounded great now I just need to listen to some vivaldi and see if i can get a smaller desk to maximize the sda

Okay I just walked away from a pair of these Polk Monsters SDA SRS 2's I am not even going to tell you what the Goodwill is asking cause you'll chastise me for walking away I just know it...The specs say 10-750 watts. The reason I walked was I don't think I have anything that will really drive these beauties! Would a Yamaha amp from the Early 00's have enough power to do these speakers justice? The Yamaha runs 100 watts through 6 channels at 8ohms.

Should I run back bite the bullet and buy these monsters?

Ummm.....yes!!!!! Don't pass up what has to be the best all around SDA's for the money!!! Run!!!

Your Yamaha amp should be fine to get them started....you can always upgrade or get something larger later. It's somewhere to start!

I have heard the SDA 2's paired with a Musical Fidelity A 308 Integrated Amp. They were amazing.

SDA's at goodwill and you balk? Sorry; they really deserve to be gone when you realize your mistake and go back.
Your yamaha would've done just fine running them. I have a pair of their larger brothers and I started mine out on a small yamaha amp.

I would have bought them whether I could power them or not. Amps are everywhere. Old Polks like that are not. Go get them or you will be the bonehead of the week. ;)

Run back and get them. Then flip. The SDA is boomy. Four small woofers AND a passive radiator have no chance at accuracy. Too much phase error from multiple drivers in the same band.
