Polk Audio Versus Advent

Hey, I would just like to dray your attention to how you phrase things. "Advents", to us, signifies usually two similar speakers, the Original Large Advent, and the New large Advent. So, saying that things bash Advents, without stating which ones, and especially since they are of the Jensen era, is kinda a slander to speakers you have never heard.

Please listen more and report back.

I said

Polk Audio:

Cleaner bass

Crisper highs

Nice to listen to.

Large Advent:

Muddy bass

Whizzer cone highs

Dirty sound.

I am not a big Polk Audio fan, but these little Polks blow the Advents away!
I never was a big Advent fan, but I like them even less now. If you listen to Advent speakers now and you are not too attached to them. I encourage you to borrow speakers from one of your audiophile friends and do a comparison. Now I have to ditch these Advents.

Sounds about right.

You just said that the Advents you were listening to were of the Jensen era, and big, but the large Advent is a totally different speaker.

Have you heard the old and the new Advent?

I own New Large Advents (NLA), which was basically a Original Large Advent (OLA) with a custom made woofer basket, and a tweeter with a bit more HF response.

I have heard Advents of the Jensen era, and I liked them, quite a bit. Eventually, they just were sitting unused, though no fault of their own, and I gave them to my then girlfriend, along with a Heathkit AA-1614 (I think) amp. She loves them, and the sound great in her place. I kinda regret giving them to her, as I have a use for them now, but they are being enjoyed, so that's all that matters.

These Legacy's must be the crapola line, not the new large Advents.

I looked and read old Advent Versus New articles.

Sad story, and now I want a pair of old Advents with the fried egg tweeters.
I want to hear what everyone else got to hear. Because these Legacy's sure sound cheap. This website made sense to me.

A quote from this website:

"Advent is a product line that looks like it has taken a real beating over the years through its multiple acquisitions. Ending up as the budget wing of Audiovox (itself a budget model handheld manufacturer) shouldnt sit well with potential buyers. These speakers arent designed to compete with NHT or Boston Acoustics; theyre designed to compete with basic Radio Shack products and the lowest end stuff you can find at the big box store".

Depends. Never heard legacys, just Baby Advents, from the very early Jensen era. Liked those.

Ask someone local if they have a pair....they are really common.

I'll buy a pair with the fried egg tweeters and recap them, then have a listen.

I'll recap these Legacy's and test again.:smoke:

If you haven't seen this yet, check it out. You want fried eggs.

Excellent!

Thank you

Can't help seeing the similarity between the fried egg tweeter, and the Wharfedale W-60 purple dome tweeter with the black cover removed.
I want the Advent speaker with the built in amp.

I can only speak of these poor excuse for Advents that should never have been made and insult the rest of the product line. I'll post pics tomorrow and you'll see what I mean. :smoke:

The Advent Legacy used the same tweeter as the inferior Prodigy/Prodigy II and a Jensen woofer. Neither of these drivers can reproduce the sound of the Large Advent. The Large Advent can be improved with the dome tweeter replacement that showed up in the 5002/5012.

I currently have sets of refoamed NLA's, 5002's, 3002's and Legacy's. The Legacy's do not match the sound and performance of the other Advents but I don't think they sound horrible. For anyone looking to build a system on the cheap, I think they would fit fine. They obviously don't sound anywhere near as good as more expensive speakers, but again I don't think they sound that bad.

The Advent Legacy was built during the Jensen era and despite having similar sized drivers is no competition for the Polk Monitor 5. They probably did not cost as much either. BTW the top plate and the strip across the bottom front are Pecan, not Oak.

The woofer is basically the same woofer that comes in Boston Acoustics and NLA/5002.

The Advent Legacy used the same tweeter as the inferior Prodigy/Prodigy II

I am almost positive it is not the same tweeter. The Maestro and the Legacy used the same one.

The tweeter isn't much different from the BA tweeters also. Voicing is very much the same as the Advents 5002 which in turn sounds much like the NLA which sounds like the OLA. The only real difference is the higher frequency response of the soft dome vs the fried egg.

I doubt in a blind test, very few people could tell the difference between a NLA, a 5002, a Legacy, and a BA A100.

...and a Jensen woofer. Neither of these drivers can reproduce the sound of the Large Advent. The Large Advent can be improved with the dome tweeter replacement that showed up in the 5002/5012.

Obviously a matter of opinion.

Straight from the "Indentifying Your Advent Loudspeaker" thread:
Legacy

Notes: There are various versions of the Legacy, but it is not quite known what the differences are in the production line. The legacy was as close to original sounding advents as you could get at the time. Decent speakers for the money. All were a 10", two way design with a soft dome tweeter.

They hardly insult the line. They are, to me, the equal of any of the Large Advents.

I have a pair of large Advents that I re-foamed myself. I love the sound and I have them in my living room.
The lows are better than a pair of Dynaco A25s that I use in my bedroom. At my age I don't know if I can hear the highs anymore.

makes sense as I have heard so many good things about the old large Advents with the fried egg tweeter, and then hear these which sound like Kmart specials. I am not going to even bother recapping them knowing they use non-Advent parts, "Jensen".

I will rid myself of them and keep my eyes opened for the old ones.:smoke:

I truly believe were you to do a blind listening test, everyone would choose these particular Polks over Advent legacy.

Polk Model 5JR 22091

I get your enthusiasm but your opening post is confusing to me.
It says Polk v Large Advent.

So apparently you are comparing specifically Polk 5 Jr v Advent Legacy?

It would be worth noting in your first post the specific models. It took awhile reading to figure which specific Polk, and it's apparently not the Large Advent at all.

There are certainly fans of certain speakers for their specific characteristics with different strengths for styles of music.

That said, I have a pair of Polk 10Bs and a pair of Advent 5002s. I love my Polks. For rock and special effects comedy albums, they have more detail/sizzle in the mids and highs and the bass is thumping. And this may still not be a fair comparison because I believe the Polk's two midranges make the difference.

I prefer my Advents to my Boston A100s. But only because of the style of music I prefer. The Boston A100s are great for jazz and smooth vocals.

Oh and I've been told I might squeeze out more performance out of the Advents and Bostons with a little more power. So I might try that. I know that's true when I listened to my Polk's on the sellers 250 watt Carver. So I it could very well be true of the Advents and Bostons.
