Polk Audio Versus Advent

Well I think if you compared how many large Advents were sold vs. the Legacy model that might tell you right there that there was no comparision between the two. I owned both the Polk 7's and 10's back in the day and they both were great sounding speakers. Today I run fully restored walnut NLA's and they sound fabulous to me but the original title of this thread seems to imply that he was referring to the original large Advents as opposed to Legacy's which share little in common soundwise.

So I own the Advent Legacies, and I would disagree with you that they sound bad.
To make this a far comparison you MUST refoam the speakers, if you have not yet, they need it. Also check to make sure they are in phase and that all of the drivers ohm out okay.

I think that the Advent Legacies have much improved tweetage over the OLAs or NLAs this is due to the dome tweeter. They are much less "beamy" and I think they extend up pretty high.

That being said, the woofer although pretty good, is not as nice IMO as the OLA woofer. It is a solid driver though after you refoam it.
 
Whizzer cone highs? That's either hyperbole, damage, or trolling. The Legacy was not a high end speaker any more than the original Advent, which represented value for dollar. But it used a respectable 10" woofer and a good tweeter. To say it sounds like a whizzer cone is ridiculous.

Polk made some nice speakers. The Monitor 5Jr is a really nice little bookshelf at the price point. I've had some iteration of each speaker, and while each has its good and bad points, your post looks like axe grinding of some sort.
 
I got NLA bought new in the mid to late 70's. I had these re-foamed about 4 years ago and the sound as good today as they ever did. Amp is a Nikko Alpha II and pre-amp is a Hafler 101. Several years ago I bought a HT receiver (Yamaha) with Polk Monitor 50's for the front speakers.

I won't go into the details of the HT set-up, but the Polks sound decent with the other unmentioned speakers. Because of that, this past winter I hauled the Polks to my vintage set-up (basement shop) to see how they would compare. The sound was "different" and not to my liking. I played several LP's and more than a few CD's and finally took the Polks back upstairs. Now granted, I did not do any "A-B" side-by-side testing. I guess I just like the old air-suspension sound!
 
I like the sound of the old Polk speakers too. Large Advents old & new with good surrounds & crossovers sound good too. I use my large Advents to listen to rock music in the basement. The Advent pictures by Piltron look like the woofers have been replace. The latest Advents I thought had a ribbed cone, not smooth. Also, the 2 pictures by Damage shows that the first speaker has a segmented gasket on the outside of the basket. The last of the large Advents I have seen always have a 1 pc. gasket & texture woofer cone. The second speaker looks like the Legacy speaker that has been refoamed. In addition, the texture of the woofer looks correct, but the foam looks incorrect. The center caps on the Legacy should be gauge/cloth unless replaced.

Could be the wrong woofers.:scratch2:

Here are the numbers on the back of the woofers.

85A-26

and 2208906
 
2208906 means a Jensen woofer made in February 1989 (8906 = sixth week of '89). Dunno anything about 85A-26.
