So I got a free sub made by Polkaudio. I have never owned a subwoofer and figured if it is free then I can see if i can repair it.
The guy that gave it to me said literally it makes satanic noises (he was joking). So it has an funny switch that is on-auto-stanby, no off properly. When plugged in, it starts to make crazy noises, like aliens or just very strange, I've never heard something like that. Once the amp gets hot I imagine, the noise decrees to a small buzz every time there is a beat or voices. It does bump with bass, but it is not clear and sounds bad.
From a previous recap of a 70s receiver, I am thinking this is bad caps, as they can make things sound bad like that, but the crazy noises am not so sure. i tested the transistors with multimeter on diode mode and it seems they are ok, on resistance as well (everything tested on circuit, so it could be inaccurate). So am not sure it is the transistors, I tend to think it is bad caps.
Anyone has had this issue?, I am thinking of buying an ESR meter so I can be sure the caps are bad and not having to take them off the board. This board on the polk is crap, the traces lift easy, i took off one of the switches to open it and clean it, because there wasn't anywhere to inject deoxit into while i did some switches and pots cleaning. And I lifted the traces, super easy to lift, and the solder most be unleaded so it takes way too long to get hot and stick to my solder wick (i have a cheap Weller solder iron with no heat control). When I put the switch back in, i had to solder it from the top of the board.
