Please read the below before posting to the poll:

Do you use a sub-woofer to support your main speakers for playing 2 channel (stereo) music? Yes or No?

Only answer Yes if your prime use of a sub is for stereo music - if you have a sub primarily for home theater and/or multi-channel use, please vote No (or don't vote at all).

Feel free to elaborate by posting to the thread if you vote Yes, and explain why you have decided to use a sub. If you have used a sub in the past but have now decided to no longer use it (or otherwise have strong opinions why not to use sub), please elaborate, as well.

Please furnish details about your stereo setup as it applies to your sub choice - main speakers type (traditional box/size/horns/stats) and amplification (tube/SS). How you connect your sub to the amp would be interesting information, too.

Thanks for participating.

Three subs in my main stereo-only setup - L & R ACI Titans against the wall behind the main speakers (Paradigm S2's), and an ACI Force at the end of the listening couch to fill in a 50-Hz dip. Main amp is a Bryston 3B-SST. I went the monitor-plus-subs route after giving up on getting bass and imaging right at the same time with larger speakers.

I listen to 2 channel exclusively, and augment my system with a sub or subs anytime my mains do not cover the bottom octave with near flat in room response.

Clean, accurate bottom octave response is very addictive, few who live with it for any duration are ever happy without it afterward.

My unmet challenge thus far is finding an economical solution that will reach the spl's i desire. Next project is a quad of Bill Fitzmaurice's 15hz Tuba subs.

I don't really need one, my Mission Argonauts can reach down to 30hz and the IMF's can go lower still, right down to 23hz.

I did have a Mordaunt Short sub until about a year ago but I gave it to a freind.

In my household and in the respective rooms that my gear inhabits, the resultant "seen" equipment can't be a majority-player much like some of the guys here on AK. :smoke:

As a result, a loudspeaker cabinet of 12x12x24 is just about right. Using a seperate 12" sub in my case helps to fill in the missing low lows that my 8" Dahlquist M-905's can't reach easily. Sounds real good to me :music:

Good discussion.

I'm old school (over 50), a sub is not part of my stereo. I like two channel systems with good speakers. If you want a big low-end, you find a pair of good speakers that give you that (like some AR3a).

Even my TV / stereo setup, I would not add a sub or more than two speakers. The Kefs that run with my TV setup sound excellent playing the latest DVD movies.

Cheers, Snade

I can't vote as I have two primary systems. I use a sub with my DQ10's. With the Cornwalls no.

no sub here...

I played around a little with dad's B&W ASW600 sub, and I didn't like it that much. ok it did have a certain effect, but the bass was pretty 'small' sounding, I think that when I ever buy a sub (if I ever) it will be a pretty big one, not a small (ish) one like dad's...

Keep them spinning,
bert.

I first put together my sub-woofer in 1980. Phillips 12" dual voice coil down firing. I built a rectangular box then put a top on to make a coffee table out of it.
For those not experiencing a sub, it adds another dimension to the music. I now could not listen to Rock & Roll without it.

I think that if you use bookshelf speakers a sub is essential. When I started using good quality floorstanding speakers I suddenly noticed that the sub was taking up more space than it was worth. my two ha'pennys.

Main system was custom designed as a satallite/passive sub system. Satallite runs full range (lows limited by cabinet design). Then I experimented with bi-amping that system. It made a huge improvement in the mids and upper range. Now upgraded to a powered sub-woofer; soon to try a stereo sub-woofer set up. Line level (rca) connections

Second system is ADS 1290's in the living room. They can use some help on the very bottom end, so a sub is used there as well. Line level (rca)connections

The bedroom has Polk LS50's. No sub needed in the 13' x 13' room.

When I had KLH Model 1's with the Analog Bass Computer, NO SUB WAS NEEDED!

I used a pioneer prologic in stereo mode using a sub for years. Now I have a 7.1 that I use in stereo mode with a sub :) I have several systems but the 2 I mainly listen to both have subs.

I had used a sub for years but found that I did not need one when I upgraded my speakers. My system has always been two channel.

I agree with skinley's post. I use a sub only because size restrictions limit my set up to monitor/ bookshelf size speakers with a 8" woofer. I use the sub to fill in the low end. If I had room for a decent pair of floor standers I would probably remove the sub from my set

In my mains the upper three drivers are essentially a full range speaker, but crossing over at 250 Hz to the bass drivers (KEF B139s) . So they're sort of sub woofers, running out of steam at around 23Hz. Currently only using two channels as the room is an odd shape for four.

I have a sub on the family room for movies, but only use two channel sound on it.
The rig I use for most music play is a hk 430 with Advent speakers, they handle the bass well enough for me.

???

With two 8" woofers in each speaker?

They have plenty of bass for me.... :scratch2:
