There was recently a similar poll, but it has been deleted. I found the topic interesting, and thought it would be fun to post my own version since the other one has disappeared.

I know that many of us listen to music using multiple formats, via a variety of mediums and systems. This poll asks which you listen to most frequently, and offers six options:

  1. Vinyl (includes LP, 45, 78, etc)
  2. Tape (includes reel to reel, 8-track, cassette and digital tape).
  3. Digital disc (includes CD, SACD, DVD, DVD-A, Blu-Ray Audio, etc)
  4. Digital files, stored on a local device (PC, notebook, laptop, tablet, smartphone, media player, hard-drive, etc).
  5. Digital files, streaming from a remote location (generally, "the cloud").
  6. Radio (FM/AM/satellite...but does NOT include Internet radio, which would instead fall into Response #5).

Please note that the poll does NOT address which format you most prefer, or which you believe provides the best sound quality.

Having all my CD's stored on an HDD with instant access via Media Monkey has had a major effect on my listening habits. I'm now looking at ripping my favorite LP's to that HDD and giving them the same sort of easy instant access.

BTW: My vote was for number 4, Digital files stored locally.
 
I'm going to have to look into Media Monkey. I currently use foobar, but am not technically savvy enough to overlay an easier user interface onto it.
 
Hard to say as it depends where I am.

At work occasionally digital files on the phone or Spotify
In the car, digital files on a thumb drive or the radio
In the garage either radio or CDs
In the basement on the main rig, Spotify, radio, CDs or LPs
In the bedroom, radio or Spotify via an old Thinkpad

I voted for radio because i like the local NPR for background, except when they go talk, opera, or pipe organ...

FLAC files played either through TIDAL which is what I listen to at work and at the gym. Then FLAC files stored on my hard disk.

So, #5, then #4
 
I chose radio. Travelling between landscaping jobs daily (truck radio) and weekends working in either my greenhouse or woodshop.


Different story afterwards when I get settled in for the night where I get to relax. Then I split between LP's and CD's.

You should give Media Monkey a try. Although there are quite a few different front ends for Foobar they are all a real PITA to install. Media Monkey IMO has a nice interface to start with but installing any of the available alternative ones is a simple Windows type install.

I'm currently listening to Sonny Rollins, St Thomas, Saxophone Colossus from an HD tracks 24/96 download via Media Monkey.
 
I store all of my music on my file server, which is a dedicated server on the local home network. 95% of my listening involves "streaming" the files over the local network (really just accessing the mapped network drive the same way I'd access a local hard drive). Since it's still over the local network, I'm assuming that falls into option 4 and not 5? Although I can access the music on my file server from over the Internet if I actually need to.

Yes...I was thinking there is a fairly significant distinction, from a user standpoint, between listening to a cloud-based repository and a local one...even tho they are (can be) technically the same.
 
Radio. AM in the daytime - oldies, the real greasy stuff 1958-63. FM at night - college indy. Can't stand knowing what the next song is so I don't listen to recorded media.
 
Surprised that lots of people listen to vinyl primarily.
Don't they have better things to do? :smoke: :D

PS. these days my vote is 1.
 
I think that depends on what my feeling is for the moment.

While I do not do tapes right now (if ever again..... my PC has alleviated all of that), I do have an FM Tuner, a Universal Digital Player (CD's, CD-R's, DVD's, DVD-A's, DVD-R's and SACD's), a Turntable System, a PC Laptop with Two External Drives attached to it (one keeps excess files off the main drive on the Laptop and assists with storage issues, and the other one used exclusively for Music Files), and a couple of Mobile Devices (an Apple iPod Classic (160 GB...... and listen in Lossless Mode), and an Apple iPhone 5S (32 GB)).

I "DO" listen attentively when I am playing Vinyl so that I can prevent unnecessary wear on my Records and my Stylus (my Turntable has NO automation onto it..... by choice).

Otherwise, it's mostly either Digital, FM Stereo, or the PC when I am at home, with a LITTLE Vinyl several times a week.

When I am on the go, it's the iPod or the iPhone when I am out and about, and on the go.

I can't break it down into percentages.

It's a spur of the moment thing with me.
