Post your Best looking/sounding Low Boy speakers

I've been through all those too. My two favorites are the TAD 1600 and the Lambda TDs.

Yeah, I really-like the old 604 duplexes. GREAT speaker for mono-listening (and single-cab mono setups... Even greater in a stereo setup. Good example of that "breath of life" factor. Awesome with tubes, like you said.

Would these be considered "Low boy" speakers?
I have Radio Shack Americana 12" 3 ways in them.
The cabinets are Acousti-craft.

A JBL L300 is no "lowboy." But if we take those components, add a W15GTi sub, and put them in a low, 10 cubic foot cabinet to put my Stewart screen on, now you're talkin'.

Why don't you consider the L300 a low boy? That speaker you show looks like it would really rock the house.
 
My personal definition of lowboy is a speaker that is wider than it is tall. Built like a piece of furniture and no higher than 30". This has nothing to do with they actual definition (if there is one), just what I'm after.

The modified L300 TV stand would definitely qualify!

I've seen these online in a few videos/pictures. I love the cabinet.

I made a boo-boo in regards to University. Somehow, I got it into my head that they are a British company, but alas, I read the whole story about the Altec acquisition and how the original University factory was in the US (Oklahoma maybe? I can't remember for sure). Anyway, my bad on that. I like the sound a lot though. Warm and open, but still organic-sounding. Very-pleasant.

White Plains to be exact.

Not sure if they ever used a Buchanan, MI address, but EV eventually ended up with the University name under their umbrella.

Edit: Should mention that they did most definitely use an OKC adress, but i think that came after Anaheim.

Might have to agree with you there. I haven't heard the lowboy version before, but the upright Concert Grand is one bad mofo. A true symphony speaker. I first heard them when I was a kid, and right away I was hooked. They had a pair of these at the Mark Twain house many, many years ago... I wonder if they're still there (I went there several times as a kid), and there was a Bozak dealer in the Westfarms mall on the New Britain/West Hartford line (Can't remember the name of the place... Some independent dealer... Nice guys who enjoyed showing off the Bozak stuff).

I'd like to pick up one of their medium-sized models like the B-302's. The CG's are just too-much speaker for me. Don't have the room. I love how you can make them sing with 30-50 watts though. THAT'S efficiency. I'd love to get a pair of the Symphonies, but I can't afford the prices they're fetching these days for them OR the Concert Grands, so it's only gonna' happen if I get really, really-lucky. Anything's possible, I guess. But thankfully, as it turns out, my W90's are a really-nice substitute. They give me that big, smooth, ultra-dynamic, and totally-musical sound that made me love the big Bozaks so much, and the price was right on.

Yeah, I thought I had read that (The person stating it thought that was the original factory... Hey, at least he was closer than I was).

And yes, I read about the EV thing. The University drivers I heard were alnico ones from the tube era (probably late '50's to early '60's). Well, regardless of where they were made, I do like the sound. You know how certain speakers just grab you? Well, this was a good example. I love a laid-back, musical, pleasant-sounding driver.

By the way, what are those cabs at the bottom of Chilly Willy's post above? Looks like an old pair of JBL's maybe (from early '60's)?

C38 Barons maybe?

They(University) were certainly a company that was respected by it's peers. I think several of their products remained unchanged through many of the changes in ownership and location. Takes good product to do that.:yes:

Sure do! :yes: Im off work this week, hoping to make new front and rear baffles for them. Im going to port them according to the EV documents. The current port is small and rear mounted, while the new one will be front mounted with the correct dimensions ;) Hopefully theyll dig a little deeper. The bass is no slouch as they are, but a little more never hurt anybody :D
