Power amp for home stereo...

Having all the power...even on efficient speakers isn't about "how loud". It's how it controls your speakers.

I have 500 watt Crown's powering the bass on my 104db efficient Klipsch and 30 watt vintage Harmon Kardon ss on the highs and all I can say is :thmbsp:

I see the intention, now. My suggestions: 901's-anyway you can, music room- a Marshall half stack and a pair of good monitors.

i recommend rugged consumer amps

such as the adcom 5500s which are VERY powerful and reliable plus quiet. pro amps are best left to the pros and their applications. check out audiogon for adcoms. buying new wont break you either.

the 5400 is also quite powerful even at its 125wpc! heres one i found at a great price:

5500 at amazon/J&R:

i have personal experience with these amps, they really KICK.

I don't understand why some are so against Pro amps. Especially if they have never used one?

I can buy twice the amp, with 3 times the power, much bigger trannys, and just as good if not better specs, for half the money as that 5500 Adcom..

Why exactly? If you're on about being quiet in terms of hiss, I run a pro amp - a Citronic beast, which is dead quiet even with the preamp maxed out. Much more power for your money with a pro amp.

I've got 3 pro amps I use at home. No chances taken. All very good quality amps, and cheaper than the Adcom. I'll put them up against most consumers amps any day.. .I've also got 5 consumer amps laying around I use, and no question, the pro amps in many cases better sounding, and in all cases much better performing..

Surely you jest. Unless you absolutely have to have an adcom these are not good deals at all. Wouldn't be very hard to out do those so called deals by going to used amps or pro amps. You could easily buy a pair of excellent amps with better specs for what they're charging for one of those adcoms.

Now I'll probably get bashed here 'but I run tw0 nexxtech (radio shack)mpa 250 pa amps bridged and they power my cv hed 5402's.They have no buzz or hum idle and I also compared them to my marantz 2325 and i like thier sound better. The one thing for sure they are loud beyond rediculous.I think building efficeint speakers would be a given.

nearly everything you list is mid-fi

i am sure it sounds ok. i need more than ok. adcoms stand up well in high end systems. not maybe as well as mark levinson or krell but thats another level.

the finer the glass is ground and the cleaner it is, the more you see. the same goes for audio.

What is the difference (definition) between mid-fi and hi-fi? Who defines it? What are the differences in the specs that define it? What is the difference in dollar amount between the two?

I'm looking for info that says pro amps are not hi-fi... :scratch2:

Most folks that are raining on pro amps have not heard one in their system.

I've heard Adcom. I'd choose a well built proamp if given the choice.

.....feel free to buy as many Adcom 125-watts-a-channel amps as you wish, HiFiTommy....only $600 a throw plus shipping....for $600 a throw and shipping, you can get four times the clean watts with QSC and Crown....I'm sure the Adcom sounds very good at 125 a channel, but....Tommy, if you're knocked out with the Adcom, I can certainly applaud that feeling.....

maybe listening to some real high end systems

will enlighten you. you cant just pronounce that your system is high end. experience will work the wonder for you.

nobody is saying these systems dont sound good, but they will prove to not be refined sounding. there are many factors and when they come together in a system, it will be obvious and a revelation.

there are some pretty nice Chevys but they are NOT Lamborghinis nor Lotuses.

lotus and lamborghini are widely spaced in price but both handily outperform any chevrolet.

Unless it's a 454 cid ....or the 507, marine.:D

I don't need to weigh in on this because I have a QSC, a UREI, some Sansui, Kenwood, Pioneer, and others. What ever floats your boat is fine.

.....you make a valid point, HiFiTommy....do the Adcoms sound "that" good, for well under $1000?....can you compare them with McIntosh?.....

One can say an amp isn't as good as another amp, but it's a meaningless statement unless the opinion is at least based upon listening experience. Even then it is only the persons opinion. While others opinions can be helpful, the bottom line is I let my ears be the judge of what I like.

Some of the best amps I've ever listened to are Yamaha pro amps.

I've listened to some pretty high end systems.. and that's why I have what I have... My wife has listened to a few higher end systems too.. and we both want to come back home and listen to ours..

I've listened to a few high end amps, and I have to say my beat-up old pro amp fares pretty well.

If you're on about pro gear shunning sound quality for toughness, that's not always true. Cheap stuff is awful, but good stuff is very good - mine has 1% metal film resistors in the signal path, film caps, Alps pots, Nichicon electrolytics...all of which isn't out of place in decent hi-fi amps.

Fan noise is the only issue really, especially if you have a small room.
