Power Amp Output Questions

Boy, could your text be any more inspecific?

"at typical listening levels in a typical room with typical loudspeakers, a consumer amplifier is never required to deliver more than a few watts."

When you limit your view to "typical" crap you may have a point!

And, when you limit your context to the miniscule fraction of percentage of speakers having that devastating low impedance and horrid phase angle, one of the amps of topic makes perfect sense. As may more elaborate discussions of impedance and phase angle. Otherwise not, and doing so more or less amounts to obfuscation.

It's dishonest insamuch as it's not the true output of the amp and intentionally misleading to give the appearance of doubling down which is an often promoted "feature" of amps. In addition, it promotes dishonest comparison to other 300 watt amps that are rated more honestly. Why do 300 watts of "high end" power kick ass on 300 watts of mid-fi power? Because the 300W of "high end" power is actually almost 600 watts (in this example).

If those figures are correct, and if that amp doubled down honestly it would be rated 580, 1160, and 2320. That's quite a departure from 300, 600, and 1200.

When this is brought to the attention of many they dismiss it because "you're getting more than you paid for". No you're not, you're getting what you paid for. They just lied to you about the amp to play on the "doubling down" mindset.

Once again you are stating at clipping. Krell doesn't say that, and to chastise them (or any manufacturer) for actually underrating their gear seems a little like sour grapes to me. You're penalizing them for actually producing more power than advertised.

I guess we'll just have to disagree. I don't see where there is a problem with any manufacturer underrating their product regardless of what it is. If Krell said their FPB produced "X" Watts @ 8 Ohms at clipping and "Y" Watts @ 4 Ohms at clipping and the amp didn't measure up you have room to complain. Otherwise, as long as something meets its advertised specs I don't understand why there is any problem.

The Krell spec does not say at clipping. You seem to be stuck on that. We'd all be better off if every manufacturer rated their products as conservatively as Krell.

I'm wondering why you don't find the "mid-fi" manufacturers at fault for producing amplifiers that barely meet their advertised specs. The Krell you mentioned clearly exceeds every single one of it's advertised specs in every way but you're complaining.

So much for the real world that competent designers accommodate.
