Problem with second zone on Onkyo TX-DS555 Receiver

I've been dealing with an Onkyo TS-DX555 receiver that has no audio at the remote speaker zone (as it is known on this model).

On this model, instead of A and B speakers driven by the main front amplifiers, it uses the surround amp channels to drive remote speakers. The sequence is to press "multi-source", select the source does not default to the same as source), press "remote" speaker button (which only comes on when all else is selected). When this is selected, unit switches to stereo mode for the main speakers.

The power amp is working in all channels. Surround works. Digital inputs work. Record out works (similar selection process). However at best I receive muted audio leaking through. Injecting a signal at the power amp does feed a signal out to the remote speakers when selected. So the relays are switching, amp is actually working as is the switching of remote speakers.

Anyone know the quirks of these units? This is the second one I've run into with the same problem and I'd like to fix this one. Not a fan of lower end Onkyo, but this is a respectable performer. PS - the TS-DX656 appears to be the same basic unit as per the service manual.
