Problem with Sony Walkman TCD-D3

I am a complete greenhorn when it comes to fixing audio kit, so I am hoping one of you guys/gals reading this post will have a simple solution that I can do myself.

This little wonder of a Walkman has been put away for a couple of years - boxed and dust free. I recovered it when I found the collection of DAT tapes that my wife had "helpfully" put away one day and inconveniently (I suspect deliberately! forgot where she put them. (I'm thinking about trading her in for a new model...)

The issue is this: When I first pressed the Open switch, nothing happened. Having pressed it a few times, then it did open. And it still does! Good so far? Nope. As soon as the door opens, and states Open, the blighter powers off! Very occasionally, it will stay on, prompt to Load and play very nicely. But is almost as rare as hen's teeth - as soon as it's switched off (to move it to another socket closer to my amp) and powered back on, I go through the same routine of Open and then it powers off. I have a friendly, very good and inexpensive tech' who could fix this (in fact he's bringing back to life a dead Sony 75ES for me) but there's only so much money in the bank and if fixing this would be easy for a technical numskull as me I shall be grateful for any advice received.

Thanks for 'listening'.

OP, you might want to post your question on Tapeheads.net. They have many more DAT users than here. All I can say is these tiny wonders of recording are very prone to all kinds of trouble and can be a bear to sort out. Best of luck!
