Problem with TEAC A-6100 MK II

You don't need a Tentel gauge, all you need is a spring scale. You wrap a string a few turns around an empty reel and tie the string to the spring scale. Put the deck in play, and pull on the string. Read the force on the spring scale. You can use the specs from my A6010 manual, they should be close enough:
Supply reel: 1.6 - 1.7 oz.
Takeup reel: 2.3 - 2.4 oz.

I bought a spring scale on E-Bay for $5 or so. They sell them at fishing supply stores, too.

Thanks Warren,
I have sring scales that I use for my A-4300 and neighbors A-6010 & A-1200. The A-6100 MK II requires a Tentelometer for the servo controlled servo. I'll post the service manual instructions for you in a day or two. The A-6100 MK II (not the A-6100 which is similar to the A-6300/A-4300) was one of, if not the first Teac to use the servo circuit. All other torque measurements require a spring scale. I happen to like the spring scale method. I've repaired quite a few decks, not only Teac with the scale to specification Brake adjustments on spec are a thing of beauty.

pilotprose,
I connected the defective transistor to my scope & component tester. The Emitter/Collector & Base junctions all showed leakage between them. The Motorola transistor shows greater insulation at the E & C junctions. Of course it's 30 years newer than the original. :D
The decks works great now.

Sorry for the delay. Busy work week as well as repairing a Luxman L-580 amplifier for a follow AK member. Here's the tension adjustment from the Teac A-6100 MK II Service Manual. This deck differs from eariler Teac decks in it's Servo Back Tension vs Slide Resistors.
I see that the file for section 2 is too large to download. I'll rescan over the weekend and post it. :thumbsdn:

Looks like a mechanical servo similar to that used in VCRs. Also I used to have a Sony TC-770 that had a mechanical tensioning servo. I think you could get around this by using a very light spring scale on the tape itself. On a properly adjusted non-servo deck, I would advance the tape to the middle and measure how much force it takes to just deflect the tape (or deflect it 1/4" or some convenient amount) on the left side of the headblock in play mode. Then adjust the servo deck for the same tension.

Thanks Warren. The tension appears to be fine. The speed is good at the end of the tape. I'm used to the slide resistor type decks. This threw me for a moment.

Hi Ron.
I 've been reading your posts, I know these are old but I have exactly the same problem with the exact same machine. Now as soon as I turn the main switch on the supply motor starts running.
Can you help me, please?
Thanks.

You are not going to get a response from Ron since according to his member info he passed away in 2016.

I'm so sorry to hear that.I'm using his posts to resolve my issue, may God bless his soul with peace. Thanks, dhnash.
