Project: Fisher CA-880

Super Noob

Super Member
Had an opportunity to pickup a CA-880 unit for reasonable $s since one channel was not working. It utilizes a STK-0080s and is a great candidate for the RCS16 collaboration project pack upgrade. The large studio fisher (sanyo) gear from the early 80s has some impressive transformers and quality involved = but has STK packs which most know will eventual give out. If you have done recaps and restores, I encourage those to consider picking up one of these non-workers.

This thread will document addressing the one shortcoming of this integrated = STK packs.
@rcs16

Lets call this = bullet proofing an under appreciated amp.

I didn't get a good picture prior to start.... let's use HIFIEngine stock.

My unit has that sweet anodized black aluminum faceplate & some decent size meters.

The offset was between 80 - 90 mV in each channel... I elected to update the the input pair and driver transistors, and DC offset is now roughly 40mV and 50mV. Nice improvement.

I have one of these coming- just bought it today. This post is going to be super helpful! How was building the STK replacement boards? What LEDs did you use? Looks great!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RMWL6W...abc_TFWWEJG9FKA1A7Z1CJDY?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I like to use these for typical dial lights and large indicators.

I keep a pile of 3mm and 5mm white LEDs that come with resistors and I make custom for each install. They typical come with 380 to 470 ohm dropping resistors, and I will adjust resistors depending on the supply voltage to ensure correct brightness. Also like to scuff these and flat top to reduce spot lighting.

It’s just some trail and error…. wish I could of been more helpful, but pretty sure just used standard resistors on the non meter lights.

Have done the RCS packs before on a RS-2010, so they are very straight forward for me after I get the plates built…. about a 10 million post thread on these packs if you knife and fork around on the google machine.

I got mine in the other day- I eBayed a CA 800 for $140 including shipping with a channel not working. The seller contacted me and said her husband installed a fuse and both channels were working (after I paid), so they canceled my order (after asking me to pay more)---LAME! anyways, there was another seller that had a CA 880, looked in good shape, said it was quiet in both channels. It was like $130 including shipping so I got that--- I'm listening to it now. It showed up, near mint, both channels seem to be working fine (and it gets loud)- just the lights are out. So, I figure I'm going to go ahead and re- cap it and add some LED's. Scuffing the LED is a good tip. I have used them in some stuff, and they don't disperse the light well. I have some vellum paper from a Marantz I have been thinking of adding with LED's. Thanks for all the information-

Hi,great job with Fisher CA 880, congratulations!
I would like to replace the final STK circuits in a Fisher BA 3000 amplifier, they are STK 0070 II. Is it possible to replace them as in the Fisher CA 880?The scheme for STK 0070II is more complex, there are several components!I'm not an electronics technician, but I want to save this amplifier somehow,thank you in advance!

Super Noob I just bought a CA880 with a blown channel. The little driver boards connected to the STK0080 aren't really mounted with any fasteners. They just hang off of the legs of the legs of the STK and have a plastic support that just serves as a spacer. They aren't physically connected to the spacer, it just keeps them from shorting to the chasis. What did you do for the driver boards when you switched to the RCS16's STK pack? Did you use solid wire so they had some support similar to stock or did you secure them some other way?

I’m getting ready to tackle one of these. Maybe two actually. This is my first time going this deep in terms of refreshing. Sure would be nice if I could find someone selling the bag-o-parts needed to do the job.

I bought the newly made STK080’s.

For the power supply and the few diodes you replaced. Where did you get them? I know, its an old thread. Hoping Super Noob hanging around.

I’m a novice. I don’t understand where these are so as to be replaced?

Had an opportunity to pickup a CA-880 unit for reasonable $s since one channel was not working. It utilizes a STK-0080s and is a great candidate for the RCS16 collaboration project pack upgrade. The large studio fisher (sanyo) gear from the early 80s has some impressive transformers and quality involved = but has STK packs which most know will eventual give out. If you have done recaps and restores, I encourage those to consider picking up one of these non-workers.

This thread will document addressing the one shortcoming of this integrated = STK packs.
@rcs16

Lets call this = bullet proofing an under appreciated amp.

I didn't get a good picture prior to start.... let's use HIFIEngine stock.

My unit has that sweet anodized black aluminum faceplate & some decent size meters.
Just curious, is there anyone rebuilding these for a fee (for those of us who cannot tackle it on our own) and if so, what would the cost be to do both channels in one?
