I thought the movie was “meh”. The book was much better (difficult to make a movie from books). Lack of character development. Would have been better as a limited TV series. Stratt, for example, was not cold enough and didn’t show how she yielded her power and the other astronauts were mere props.

I'm assuming that was the German lady in charge of the mission? Honestly I don't think I caught names of anyone besides Rocky and whatever Ryan Gosling's character was.
Many movies do a poor job of character development.

Yep. She was Dutch in the book, German in the movie.
I enjoyed it.
My wife and son had seen it but wanted to all watch it together...

I was going to quit because I thought they were going to kill Rocky. Luckily, my wife and kid told me they weren't going to kill Rocky, so I remained. (I refues to watch movies where they kill the dog, too. And don't even get me started on Bridge to Terabithia! Any way, all in all, I enjoyed the sweetness of Project Hail Mary.

Movie theater or should I wait until I can borrow from the library? I have movie night with friends to watch on my home theater. Home made popcorn, no annoying people in the audience.

I tend to think along these "lines" as well, finding it in a positive light, without the blood and guts that most alien vs humans end up being.
This was an offering that the whole family could take in without the abusive language and dealing with some dangerous predator.
There were some "flat" spots and it could have been shortened, but the overall "message" was worth it.
The dénouement was on the contrived side...but still got a laugh out of it.

IMO, it is one that can be enjoyed at home equally as well as at a theater- big screen is not a must, unlike having to see the Odyssey on the big screen first.
Watched it on Prime last night. An excellent movie -- everyone loved it. Good story, not predictable, great acting. I can't really think of a another actor who could pull off this role as well as Ryan Gosling. The humor was an important element to me, with such a long movie and so few characters on screen for most of it, Ryan did a great job.
We saw it on projector/surround system -- but it would have been nearly as enjoyable on a smaller screen with lesser audio -- that's a high complement from a modern Sci-Fi movie (where typically it is much more about the special effects than the story).

Watched it in a movie theater a month or two ago without checking reviews first, hadn't even seen a trailer - never again.
Long, boring, predictable, with visual gimmicks. And I have never liked Gosling.
Generally I don't watch movies longer than 2 hours, in fact I prefer something like 90-100 minutes.

That's a great review.
For all the 'small' aspects of filming, it was really good at establishing and maintaining the intimacy of the characters.

I like Gosling and I hate short movies. They are rushed and lack character development. But none of that matters when the story holds no interest for me.
