As my passion to find and rebuild vintage equipment from the golden age continues, the next local find is a little cap coupled early 70s Marantz 1030 that was sick. It is littered with those failure / noise prone 2SC458s. Every time I run into a cap coupled amp, I am always floored how well they sound.

Very nice work! I have a 1030 in original state that I use as my workshop amp. It has been on the back burner for 4 or 5 years now as I keep getting bigger amps/receivers to restore. But this makes me want to move it to the head of the line. It HAS to sound better with all of those high quality components going into into it. I wish there was a way to sample the actual sound online, but we're not there yet. Beautiful! :thumbsup:
 
Steve…. Amazing sounding little guy. You could go with UKL or UES in lieu WIMA for those low leakage caps if you don’t want to do films. Regardless changing those small transistors is a must.

I usually do use the WIMA's all over the preamp boards. I also tried that Mundorf EVO Oil at the inputs once. I really couldn't hear a difference - although I don't claim to have golden ears. Anyway, I use .22uF WIMAs there these days.

Replacing the trimmers Marantz used is mandatory for me. I've had too many that just wouldn't stay stable.

Any suggestion what to use to replace this type of trimmer? This is for a 2235 and for the 4270.

I haven't run into that type before. But a Bourns trimmer with the same lead spacing should work. Maybe start a thread with that picture and someone will chime in with a part number or link to what they used.

I noticed the dc output voltage on the speaker terminals is too high and not stable at all, so I'm going for a full recap on it.

I used your parts list and found most of the parts, but as you probably know Nichicon had stopped manufacturing some series and they are no longer in stock.

I noticed the dc output voltage on the speaker terminals is too high and not stable at all, so I'm going for a full recap on it.
Comment: Don't do the full recap until you find and fix the problem with DC on the speaker terminals, otherwise when it doesn't work you will have a difficult time isolating the problem. o_O

Follow the signal from the output of the Main Amp board to the speaker outputs. You will see that the signal passes through a DC blocking 2200uF capacitor (C003, C004) before it gets to the speaker terminals. Check to see if those two are bad (shorted) and replace and test for DC at the outputs again.
