Proton D1200 strange behavior

I have a Proton D1200 amp and every once in a while when I power it up and play something, the left channel is at a much lower volume and the sound is distorted ... if I turn the volume all the way down, the left VU meter will not bottom out, instead it'll read around 0.01 but no sound is heard. Then if I wait a minute or two, a very unsettling loud POP will occur and then everything will operate normally for hours, even days or weeks - it's very intermittent. I've tried powering everything down and then back on, but when the condition occurs, it persists until the pop. The pop can NOT be a good thing, obviously, for the amp but especially for my speakers. Does anyone have any theories? Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Thank you for your thoughts on this, I suspect you are correct. Since this repair would be out of my league, I guess it's time to contact my local tech. Don't want to kill myself, or worse, ruin the amp! :music:
