QLS-1 Restoration Project

It's been a year since I last updated this thread. Still not a day that goes by that I’m not amazed by the sound produced by the qls-1. Nothing new to my system except replacing all of the op-amps in my cd player with Burr Brown OPA2134's
Made a big diff in the liveliness of the sound also you can hear the strings vibrate like there in the room with you. Just read a post by cdfac where he mentioned how well female vocals and piano sound. I couldn’t agree more, seems like my best sound comes from that combination together. Looking forward to adding more watts in the future.

I just bought a pair of QLS 1's and have them biamped to 2 Marantz 2325's. Not nearly enough power but the quality of sound even at lower volumes is amazing. I am picking up two SAE 2400's and a SAE 501 today. (one SAE is for my Kappa 8's). It is correct, there are not too many reviews on these towers. Maybe because the full body sound is a personal preference. To me, I have been listening to hifi all my life and I have NEVER heard better sound. A friend of mine took me to an audition of $60,000 system and I was truly let down. I will post my review once the amps get a clean bill of health and are hooked up.
Thank you for your (banffskiing) input and instructions.

I've had my QLS-1's for about a year and a half now..... I don't know why, but after all the work I put into them I really don't play them that much. I have even thought about selling them. But recently I fired them up again and have been listening to them on a daily basis for a couple weeks. They are great sounding speakers. Cumbersome, clunky, power hungry, but they sound great. Personally, I wish they sounded better at lower volumes. It seems like anything below 12 o'clock on my volume knob and the QLS is not even awake. I have plenty of juice for them, but they are just so frickin' low efficiency, I have to crank them so much more to get the same SPL's as even medium efficiency speakers..... I guess that is why I'm not more in love with them than I am. That said, with some coaxing the emits open up, the Watkins kick in and WOW! They sound truly impressive. Amazing low end. The Emits are crystal clear and effortless. I have been toying with the idea of rebuilding the crossovers and / or using an active crossover.... This thread has a lot of good info on the subject...... Just rambling my 2 cents here..........:thmbsp:

Just found this thread today while I was searching for info on repairing the mid domes in a newly acquired pair of Quantum 2's.

Wow. Why in the hell isn't this thread a sticky?!?! :ntwrthy:

Qls-1 Control

Here are a few pics of the control panel with the new 5 ohm pots installed.
Probably did not need them cuz after I ordered them I took the old ones apart and cleaned them and now they seem ok also.

banff

I have units 7001230 and 7001231. They must've been on the line together!
