Questions on SX-D5000

I became the proud owner of an SX-D5000 this week. I was suprised at the size and weight of it but after giving it a clean and checking the DC offset I hooked it up and I was blown away. It's the best thing I've ever heard! Hooked it up to my PD-91 and starting playing some tracks through the pair and I heard subtle details more easily, the vocalist really stood out - all in all a great receiver i think!

Only real negatives are a slight ding on the amplifier section facia, and a blown "Stereo" bulb and "FM" bulb. The bulb behind the "L & R Ohms into 8W" which I think - looking from the schematic is the Power lamp? looks to be a bit dim so that might want replacing too... I am considering an LED conversion and again, having looked at the schematic I saw that the power supply for the bulbs might already be a DC power supply? I just wanted to know if someone could confirm this or has done this LED conversion before. I've read that MTF had at least partially done one on an SX-D7000.

Secondly, I know this unit is some age now and although its working great now I wanted to know if there was anything I should do pre-emptively that might be a known failure point.

I've noticed that Q201 and Q205 on the power board getting incredibly hot - I think I could probably burn myself on them! I wanted to check if anyone else's are as hot or if this is a sign of a problem. If its normal, I was thinking about moving them elsewhere in the case to improve their cooling capacity - I've seen this done on some SX-1980 threads. Would this be a good idea?

Love this thing already, I cant help going back to it all the time and just listening to it - haven't connected an antenna to it yet but already it gets most stations at full reception! :music:

Great buy indeed!! I have mine connected up to a Pioneer PL-L1000 DD and it sounds excellent. Sorry,can't give you any technical advice,but be extra careful with the sliding control knob shafts as they're made of very thin plastic,therefore are prone to breaking/snapping off very easily.
 
Thanks.I'll keep that in mind when Im taking the facia off. Another thing I meant to ask was if running it on a pair of 6 ohm speakers is ok.
 
Great pickup indeed! I own the SX-D5000 and SX- D7000 the big brother and they aren't going anywhere. Enjoy it.
 
6 ohms shouldn't be a problem for your 5000, My SX D7000 has no problem running 4 ohm speakers. ;)

Thanks - I thought it would be ok but seeing as the back panel had no rating I was unsure - given this is an NSA as well, I want to do my best not to blow it up!

Any thoughts on those two transistors though? They do run very hot... :idea:
 
Thanks for the link RCS, I've been having a read - looks like it is 8.5VDC so an LED conversion should be easy enough. I can use an LED for the stereo lamp too? I'll look into putting bigger heat sinks onto the regulators. They have tiny heat sinks on at the moment.
I tried hooking up the SX-D5000 to my SPEC-4 to see how the combo sounded. Was pretty good - maybe about the same as the SX on its own but I think I need to listen some more to clarify that. :music:
 
Post a pic of the p/s, if it is not too much trouble, I do not think I have looked too close at this design, I could not have as I do not even have the s/m in my library, have to get it. Pretty close to the D7000 however.
I think it is hard to tell differences in pre-amps. Comparing phono stages, you might hear differences.
 
If it is anything like the SX-3900, be prepared for some, uh, challenges. Be careful as these things are not forgiving from what I remember. Double stacked boards, inaccessible points are the norm, PITA but worth it in the long run. At least yours is working. RCS saved my bacon by walking me through the painstaking process as mine was not functional but is now working and project near complete, mainly cosmetics at this point.

As far as the LEDs, with the limited experience I have, my advice would be to get some decent LEDS that you can get specs on, and mess around with resistance values until you get close to illumination you want. Some of the lamps on 3900 were AC and some were DC. It is going to be a pain regardless of whether you replace them with LEDs or incandescent, at least it was on the 3900. I am hopeful that I never have to repeat that process.

Here's a shot of the power supply and the hot transistors. Running it with the cover off, the output heatsink is quite warm - I would say beetween warm and hot to the touch and I can feel the heat off the transistors on the PSU above the board.

Do any of your SX-D's have a piece of thick white card over the heatsink and power supply? Mine does. Fixed with two screws into the output heatsink. I removed it for the photographs and it seems to run a little cooler without it as you might expect. But I'm thinking of just checking the idle current to make sure its not too high.... good idea? bad idea?

I've looked at the bulbs and the schematic and most of the lights are already LEDs by design. Just a few like the "power" light, FM, AM, Aux, Phono, Stereo and Memory are tungsten bulbs and they look to be on a DC emitter follower supply anyway so IF I can find a nice LED with a good spread on the light then I guess it should be straighforward, not forgetting adding resistors inline with the LEDs or... maybe from the look of the schematic... I could just change one in line with the feed to the bulbs to drop the voltage and current to bunches of them with a single resistor.

How big of a heatsink would be best? I'm not sure how big I would need. The transistors seem to be rated at around 30W.

Would it be better to mount them to the chassis?

Reconnected it to itself now and relistened... There's a bit more stereo seperation depth and bass to the SX-D5000 than the SPEC-4 I think....

I've been thinking about moving those transistors... Is it possible to get a connector or plug for a TO-220 package and move them to another part of the chassis, just to the left of the power supply PCB and fit them with a heatsink like this? I've been trying to get my head around what size heatsink would be best but equations for thermal resistance etc are bogging me down and I'm not sure if I'm getting them right or not.... :confused:

image.jpg IMG_2024.JPG Just brought home an SX-D5000. After several "WOW" moments listening to Acoustic Alchemy, took it to workbench to clean and immediately had a question: HOW do you get volume knob off???? I saw a screw mentioned in service manual but I don't know what kind it is
