I kinda bumped into this one today,a PLANAR sr 2080.
First of all ,the build quality is what caught my eye.I had to take a closer look,and when I lifted it ,a 40 pounder I guessed.The Planar has real walnut cover,nice feel of the aluminum controls and switches(stepped attenuator),the aluminum front with blue lamps,notice "Stereophonic Receiver" writen looking earily similar to Marantz,beside the Planar nameplate.
The rear panel has pre-outs and main-ins with jumpers."Made in Canada" printed for all to see!Made by Electrohome in Kitchener Ont.,
When I powered it up,nice blue lights,and all the coloured function lights working and looking nice.I turned bass and treble to flat and gave it a little juice..Very clear,detailed,highs that wake up your speakers,and some really nice lower frequencies....I have to spend a bit of time listening to this one to give an honest opinion,but I'm impressed so far.At 1/4 volume my Energy Pro 22's started breathing and it was loud!Turned the beast down and wanted to check how the AKG 240 Studio Monitors headphones sounded,very nice.
I carefully removed the walnut cover and was immediately surprised to see 2 huge blue caps,huge transformer and lots of aluminum heatsinks with 4 Motorola transistors.I'm going to see how the separate amp and preamp sections sound in the next couple of days and give the cosmetics a cleaning and consider this one a "Gooder".Definitely worth keeping and having restored.
