Thanks, the record is excellent and the clear vinyl just adds to the Great Ray Charles..voice and sound. :thmbsp:

If you like Ray Charles' jazz albums, the recent Rhino 100% analog pressing of "The Great Ray Charles" sounds amazing, truly a reference quality LP, and it's only about $25. It was expertly cut by Doug Sax IIRC, and pressed at RTI on nice thick, quiet vinyl.

I have the original Impulse version of Genius + Soul = Jazz. The sound is amazing! It's so "Live" sounding. My favorite Ray Charles album. A must have album!

I have a mono pressing... it's kind of beat up, but it definitely is a powerful sounding record! Was that one recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's place?

Generally speaking, I vastly prefer his Atlantic records to his ABC/Impulse/Tangerine records, which are much more 'uptown' and less greasy.

Here's a tip: the 1962 album, "Do the Twist with Ray Charles," contains an unedited version of "What'd I Say" in a unique, bone-dry mono mix, done special for that album by Tom Dowd. The 1962 mix has never been reissued and is only available on the "Twist" album.

For another recommendation, I bet the MFSL pressing of "Genius Sings the Blues" sounds great. I have an original pressing, so I haven't bought the reissue, but pound for pound that's probably his finest album, and the new MFSL has been doing great work.

I expect there are numerous compilations out there. The only one I have is the "Greatest Hits" album on ABC Paramount, but that only covers his early '60s hits, and doesn't include his groundbreaking and essential '50s hits on Atlantic, which is my favorite RC period. I'm sure this material has been comped a few times.

Any and all of his Atlantic albums are well worth owning. None of them are duds. I'm not as enthusiastic about the ABC era as a whole, too slick for my taste and often more pop than R&B.

I got to see Ray Charles in concert in 1984, from about the 10th row. Pretty spectacular show too!
