My first post... recently received the vintage bug from my friend who was looking for a system for his basement. After some research and listening.... he was transported back to the late 70s - needless to say I hitched a ride = albeit a few states away.
My room as a young boy had some Altec 14s pushed by Technics SA-500 (~). They were given to my father = then to me.
I really wanted a SA-800 to relive my youth, but I saw the "toroidal" mini-monster on ebay and went that direction (in lieu of Marantz / Sansui / Pioneer). I thought there was great valve at $400.
Wowzer... she is purdy. Obviously the unrefined CV 12s need to go - so I was told to go with digital speakers as I am not analog = specifically KG4s. I found a nice pair for a few hundred bucks locally.
This is when I was starting to get the sickness of trolling CL for more... should I not be happy. I found some L36 with blue grills that someone was going to throw in as part of sale of junk mid 90s receiver. I picked up for $20. I am still working on these... but have refoamed.:thmbsp:
My wife at this point thinks I need an intervention...
I work remotely from home, and I found a pair of really nice HPM-60s with grills. $60 later I picked up these guys... the woofers were the only part that looked horrible.
Don't kill me but I refinished the woofer cones... they now look as good as they sound. Screw it - these are mine and I have no regrets. Purdy.
Problem is that I have no apartment receiver... look what I found today for $75. The older step brother... STA-2000.
Needless to say the HPM-60s really like their new friend STA-2000.
Have always been told if you have a problem you should 1st admit it, then talk about it with others. That is what I am doing.
My $135 apt setup sounds unbelievably good. The input lights don't work, but I will get into that soon enough. Just thought I would share = sharing is caring. Some folks here like a good story and pictures (this is mine).
