Realistic Mach I

Would $40 be a good price to pay for a set of Realistic Mach I's in need of foam surrounds? These have a 4029 id # on them.

I've never heard them and don't follow the Machs, but yeah, I would think so. A set in really good condition goes for well over $100 I believe.

you can also buy the woofer replacement from PartsExpress - they are exact replacements. Actually I think they are on sale right now. Just a thought. 40 bucks is a good price.

40 bucks is a great deal. Idk about the serial numbers but even if they have foam surrounds it's still a great price.

Yes and then refoam them, Rick Cobbs (loneytunes2001 on ebay) has the correct foam. I did just this and paid $40 like your opportunity. I am planing on implementing the videolady mods that are detailed on AK. I also bought a mach 2. I really like both of these speakers. they have been in rotation for about a year, displacing my JBL l100.

I just picked up a pair of Mach 1's--the 4029 version and the woofers were all rusty, moldy and contained no foam surround because it had deteriorated. When I pulled out the woofer the back said 6ohm on both. I thought the 4024's were 8ohm and the 4029's were 4 ohm??

I plan on getting two new woofers from PE.

Finally, what can i use to replace the stinky, moldy yellow insulation that was in each speaker? Thanks again!

There are threads on the site with people using either fiberglass insulation or polyfill (the stuff you can find at craft stores).

PE has the replacement for that 'stinky, moldy' insulation too. For me, getting the PE catalog in the mail is akin to me getting the Sears 'Wish Book' before Christmas when I was a kid!

Has anyone measured these and declared them to be an exact match? I know that VL measured the originals for that long upgrade thread, but I am not aware of anyone testing the ones sold from Parts Express.

Understand that I am not referring to physical size measurements. I don't doubt that those are the same. The fact that Parts Express is advertising theirs as 4 ohm while dorsett's woofer is stamped 6 ohm makes me wonder about the parameters other than physical size.

The description at Parts Express claims that their woofers feature "the same warm, thundering sound characteristics as the original, but thanks to contemporary materials and technology will last far longer". That claim may be true of the foam surrounds on the woofers from the 4029s but I've owned a three pairs of 4024As and still have a pair of the woofers right now and the surrounds were still fine on all of these 35 year old woofers. I also have my doubts as to the veracity of that claim for any part of those speakers other than the foam surrounds.

dorsett, don't throw away your original woofers, even if you buy new ones. Pass them along to someone who will refoam them and use them. There are plenty of 4029s out missing the woofers due to folks tossing them when there was nothing wrong with them that wouldn't have been fixed by a cheap and easy refoam job.
