Consider:
When the Mach Ones were marketed, Radio Shack was the only local source for consumer electronics for a large swath of the US (this point was driven home to me in the early 1990s when my wife and I traveled to a small town in Airzona; we needed a camera battery and RS was the only game in town). Most people were unaware that you could get good stereo equipment via mail order, and many of those that were would have been wary of purchasing unauditioned equipment, especially speakers. When you have a store that is seemingly everywhere, with speakers that look impressive (especially when that's all you've been exposed to), it's no wonder that they sold so many.
When I was a kid the Mach Ones looked impressive, but living in the NYC area, I had access to much better outlets for my stereo equipment needs, so never felt the need to shop at Radio Shack (they were also expensive compared with the other stuff that was available) much, although I did purchase a few different pairs of small speakers like Minimus 7s and the various Linnaeum-based Optimus speakers in the mid 1990s, during their frequent sales.
