Rebuilding JBL Barzilay cabinet pictorial

They do sound VERY GOOD. The JBL E140 woofer is not the best match, but a friend called last night and he has a pair of JBL 2226 I can use until my Lambda TD15 are reconed. I am going active three way in the coming week. Right now I have crossovers made from my junk box and I don't think they work very well.

Looks great! Thanks for all the photos!

I have a question about the copper. I often see modern speakers with some sort of absorbent material where you put the copper. Do you think that matters in the way the speakers work? That is, since the copper is not in the direct path of the cones as they move the air, do they affect the sound at all, or is it purely cosmetic?

That was my thinking Wiggy. The Heils are behind the front baffle and well above them. The horn mouths are nearly 12" in front of them. I've not heard, or has anyone else, any kind of refection issues. And yes, the copper is just cosmetic. I figure that if I am going to spend so much time in front of them, they might as well look good right?

So purty, Dennis.

Thanks Nate. When I get my Lambda TD15s back, I will have the phase plug copper plated, and the new 4" tall spikes should be ready soon and those will get copper platting as well.

My E-140's sound good in a similar role (4 in Bag End cabs with Selenium drivers and JBL 2345 horns), what problems are you experiencing? My big dual 15" Bag Ends double as bass guitar cabs with a big Crown XLS-802.:music:

Sounds good! Does the phaseplug simply un-screw on these? I have a set of TD15M being manufactured as we speak.

Semi-OT, I once tried to do some home electro-plating with acetic acid (vinegar) and a small 18V/1.5A power supply: I plated a car key with some copper, it looked good but the finish was really not durable and it corroded away in a matter of weeks, but it was to be expected. :)

They might sound better with a steeper crossover but with a first order xover, the dust cap rings ragged. Also, they are only good in these cabs down to about 90hz.

Yep, it is just a 1/4 - 20 screw on.... finger tight.

Here is a couple more pix

Nice work there Nagle! I might steal your copper front idea in a future project.

Curious as to what lead you to have to recone your TD15's? They can't be that old can they?

I got them with 1 blown coil and 1 with the wrong cone in it. Shortly after I got them, AE had business issues and I had to wait a couple years to get them fixed but it was well worth the wait.

Yeah a buddy of mine got a pair of their 18's recently and loves em. I think I will be investing as well down the road for some 15's and maybe some 10's.

They are fast, tight, and accurate. I've been tossing around the idea if building ESS Rock monitor style speakers with 2 TD10s and the big ass Heil on top.

Looks pretty cool, Dennis! I like the art piece on the wall, too.

(Miss my Edgarhorns... :-/ )
