I guess this thread is only for my own horn-tooting, but its been a long winter (the reusables area closes for snow reasons from december to april) and I'm eager to show off (not that special) this week's finds:

Marantz SD 3020 cassette tape deck

Pair of Boston Acoustics A60's with ok surrounds (they're temporarily replacing my JBL 8216A's)

NAD 5255 CD player, absolutely trashed when I found it (it had rained the night before) but after a good outside cleaning, and a check inside, I powered it up, and ran just fine. I replaced the drive belt for the linear skate loader, and now its good as new, well, inside :sigh:

the NAD 5255 as of this evening (but I can't seem to get that white stuff off the top, and those rust stains are never going away, edited for file size):

I have a similar NAD from the swap pile at our transfer station. Mine has "issues" :-) but sort of works. Actually I have a couple of as-found NAD CDP's like that...

The real reason I replied to your post was to mention your deviantart link. My 17-yo son has a page there too, as does one of his buddies. Look for 'icouldbeahero' (photos). Cannot recall his friend's moniker.

We're getting into prime dump diving season here in MA!

i want a dump. well, i dont know of any in kansas city. maybe i should get off my ass this summer and find some cool stuff.

In the absence of a dump, it's perfectly acceptable to attend a flea market, charity sale, or thrift store. (I feel like Miss Manners).

I prefer the dump not 'cause it's free (although that is a plus), but because I don't have to haggle. I really don't have a great idea of what things are worth, so I get a bit inhibited at flea markets, etc.

The other big plus about the swap pile (and the scrap metal pile) at the town transfer station (no longer really a 'dump') is that they have a generous return policy!

Ya Mark, I'm considering moving out near you just so I can visit your dump, oh excuse me, recycle station. Is that better? :D

The problem with the flea markets around here (close to Boston), is that their idea of a Flea Market is sunglasses, sneakers, designer handbags and as far as audio BPC and "boom boom" car subwoofers, NO vintage!

I think if I headed a bit more West/ N. West to the quaint little New England, God's country towns (like yours) I might find some REAL flea markets with some real treasures.

JoZmo:

Come out one nice Saturday AM this spring/summer and browse with me!

As to fleamarkets: I think you can find at least LP's at most of 'em, no? Our town has a big fleamarket as a fundraiser every fall (usually Columbus day weekend). I have always turned up a few goodies. Well worth a visit, and pick some fresh apples and get some cider while you're here on a gorgeous fall day.

BTW, the best fleamarket(s) around for folks like us are the MIT Fleas (one Sunday a month in the good weather) in the People's Republic of Cambridge and the NEARC quarterly antique radio fleamarket in Nashua, NH (www.nearc.net). Also, there's the BIG antique radio fleamarket in Westford every February (http://www.antiqueradio.com/radio36.html for last year's).

Believe or not Mark, no LP's at the Flea Markets around here. They look at you like you got THREE HEADS if your looking for them.

I've heard a lot about the MIT Flea but never been. Do you know whwn they begin?
I'll keep Columbus Day weekend in mind. Maybe take a ride out there with the whole fam damily!

2) re: Autumn fleamarket in Harvard, MA: It's the League of Women Voters! Only info on the '04 edition, so far, but I am sure there'll be another. Lots of crafts vendors, too, as well as locals cleaning out their basements/garages:
http://www.lwvharvard.org/lwvh_fleamarket.htm

Finally, if you're into arts and crafts: there is also a nice crafts fair, usually the previous weekend, in Harvard at the Hazels' farm (right at 2 and 111) sponsored by the Lions' Club:

(Google turned up the above page from 2003, but it's been an annual event for several years)

I'll be at the MIT flea market this sunday for a little birthday shopping if anyone else is going
