Reciever for Klipsch KG-4s

I inherited a pair of bose 901s series V about a year ago from my dad that got me into the audio world. After getting bored of the flat bose sound I did some research and pulled the trigger on a pair of Klipsch KG-4s with titanium tweeters. I moved the bose downstairs and use them as secondary speakers for my record player.

As of now I have a Yamaha rx-v385 driving the KG-4s that I had previously from the bose. They sound great, but was wondering if they would sound even better/warmer with a marantz receiver? I know they don't need much power to drive them, but have heard that they pair really well with marantz and truly shine with a tube amp.

I was looking at a Marantz SR7400, Marantz NR1508, and Luxman since I don't have another 1k to put into a receiver right now. I also saw a yamaha cr-1020 pop up for a good deal.

Should I stop obsessing over this and stick with what I have, or is it worth the investment to pursue a new receiver?

Well, I'm usually a tube guy. But I bought a Marantz 2230 receiver for my shop. I thought it sounded pretty good. with some small bookshelf speakers I had. Then I got a recap kit, and replaced all the electrolytic caps, most small transistors, and some diodes. WOW. I still can't believe how great this receiver sounds. Now I have it playing through a pair of Klipsch Heresy 1's, that are stock. And these things sound heavenly. I am very soon going to recap the Heresy's, and start down the Super Heresy II rabbit hole. I have everything I need, but I want to do it one mod at a time, instead of just doing the whole thing all at once. So yes, they should go great with a Marantz receiver. And you don't need a high watt model. The 2230 is rated at 30 watts a channel, but puts out 42 watts a channel. I have never turned it up past 12 o'clock. I usually listen to it at around 9:30 to 10 o'clock and I like it on the loud side. Hope this helps.

A wise path you take............one step at a time. Replace caps, then tweeters, then woofers and port with foam.
 
Hello Claude, I have a question or two. First what thickness egg crate foam do you use inside the cabinets? Is there any other type of stuffing used? Or just the egg crate? And Am I correct that I don't need to change anything besides the recap in the crossovers. Thank you.

I have a Marantz NR1605 that I thought sounded incredible, until I got a tube amp for 2 channel. I am running a Glow Audio Amp Two that they’re closing out on Facebook Marketplace for $500. It’s a Hong Kong made, EL84 powered, 12AX7 driven, 15 watt push pull amp that after some tube rolling, has more than exceeded my expectations. For AV, I’m using the NR1604, using an Emotiva Mini 100-Xbto drive my front channel speakers, while the avr handles the rest.

Yeah, maybe stay put. That Yamaha doesn’t look too bad. It’s full featured, and gives you a solid 90 watts, 20Hz to 20kHz with two channels - you could do far worse. Without spending considerably more, you will get a lateral at best. It will sound different and you’ll like it, but then after a month you’ll wonder if it was worth it.

After doing a little more research I might keep my eyes out for a Pioneer SX-737. Looks like a solid build and 45wpc should be enough power, also the blue light is a nice touch.

Marantz does sound better the high´s are less noisy ,as it happens with other tone control ,i even use loudness with a marantz amplifier i have for 37 years because it seems to improve the treble frequency, i also like Yamaha amplifiers but for loud listening, the marantz seems to have a more refined sound, but both great sounding brands

those were the best sounding receivers from the 70´s i ever heard ,i own a SX-838 from 74/75 ,not one amplifier released in the last years have such a quality , i also test hi-fi components for more than 30 years, i also have a 74 system the ES-2000 from Pioneer while living in Africa and it says it as 7+7watts at 8 ohms and conected to it a pair of CS-997 from 1991 ,with the loudness on it made the 30cm woofer vibrate more than a pioneer reference series from the same year the A-616mkII wich as 70+70watts at 8ohms also the treble and bass sound more defined on the 74 receiver ,the ones on the 1991 amplifier are almost hurtfull to the ears and the loudness is almost unheardable after hearing the 74 receiver, but not in need of lot´s of power i have a pair of mission 761 at 4ohms and it sounds real clean and detailed and using a 72 PL-12D turntable i got with diferent amplifiers and speakers better sound than any project turntable around 1.000€ this with the original cartridge and stylus pc-30 pn-30, the red one from the pioneer catalog, my family had a hi-fy store that had there a lot of 70´s material still closed in the boxes and stylus from pioneer i had a lot of them , they look so refined compared to what is sold today as substitution needles
 
Hopefully the receiver has an extra midrange button, like a loudness button. The ones I had were boomy, with almost no midrange at all. Ran them with a NAD 7140, Denon PMA 980R, and some Adcom separates.

i forget to mention that in 2019 i got for myself a pair of klipsch that it surprised me ,at the moment i don´t remenber the reference but it´s one of those in black with copper speaker and they are powerfull and at the same time have a good definition this using my pioneer SA-608 from 78 ,that makes them sound better than a arcam alpha i bought in late 90´s said to be so good but till today i have made more repairs than the 70´s pioneer amplifiers or receivers i own ,this also matters refer that the arcam alpha today looks older than the 78 pioneer ,built with cheap material , i for a lot of time only used 70´s components when in early 90´s i choose to spend money on a 90´s black system ,i ended up buying a ES system from Sony but in 96 ,only 4 years after buying all components i started to have problems with the cd player and the cassette deck ,also the speakers i had were from cerwin-vega ,each cost me what today is 1.500€ when selling easy my es system i bought a pioneer URUSHI series ,till today i haven´t got one problem ,only changed the belts on the cassette deck and all it´s working and sounding very good but in reality a sytem that belonged to my father the top-end components from pioneer on the 76 catalog, after restoring the spec-1 and 2 pre and amplifier also a pair of HPM-150 ,it sounds much better than my 90´s pioneer system and the turntable i use with it ,a PLC-590 with a SME arm and a audio-technica cartridge ,only a turntable bought by a older friend of mine from germany who lives now in interior south of Portugal, a project that with a cartridge he bought cost 14.000€ it sounds very close to mine and he as better amplifier and speakers ,so i think this brand is selling a fake image of what is the quality of sound in vinyl, and i used to critisize plastic turntables in the 80´s, who in reality if well installed they sound very good ,i only heard a FLuance turntable and it was cheap ,it sounded much better than any project till1.000€´s
 
I have been watching for a set of 4.2's or 5.2's just so I can hook them up to my Sony STR-V4. It's 55 watts and built with transistors and discrete components! You can still find V4's for a good deal!
 
I guess I should avoid this forum. I am not a fan of Klipsch.

I have moved away from large speakers.
 
i´ve seen one pair just like the ones i bought but very tiny, size is not a matter , there are for all tastes and purposes. the model is kiplsch R-51-M, the litle ones but with a nice sound , in black with the woofer in copper ,a nice combination of colours. Allthough in litle speakers i prefer Mission
