Looking for advice for a new cartridge for my Realistic LAB 400 turntable I've not used in years.

Anyone here have any suggestions?

Somewhere between $50 - $100, I guess. The current cartridge is a Shure SC39ED that's about 12 years old. I think it needs a new stylus, as it seems to "squat down" lower than it used to with the same tracking force of 1.5g.

Well there are quite a few options in that range.....

LPgear.coms AT95he, AT95se, and AT95e (priced highest to lowest) are great carts that sound fantastic in there price range. They are good at all kinds of music, from rock to classical to jazz. I think this is the best series of cartridges that came out of Audio Technica, and lpgear.com has made them great with the styli they have come up with for them. Very highly recommended, and they all would be a great match to your arm compliance wise.

Another option is a Sumiko Pearl. This is my present cartridge, and I am really happy with it. It has a very good midrange (almost grado good) with clear and refined highs, a great lowend, and tracks very well, even in the innermost groves. I will say the soundstage is a bit congested (confined), compared to the AT95 series carts, but still I would recommend it. Its also on the lowerend of compliance so it would mate well with your arm.

Some like the Shure m97xe, but I just never liked the sound, quite boring in my opinion. And there quality control is quite poor so the chance of getting a bum cart is higher than normal. All in all I wouldn't recommend it:no:

Well there are some options you could look at, hope you find a cart you enjoy, Nick

Speaking of AT's, their AT440MLa is worth considering. You can probably get it from LP Gear or Amazon (make sure ut's the MLa, not an ML.) The original cartridge is probably fine, so instead of buying a new Shure M97xe, why not get a nice new stylus from JICO?
