Recommendations for speaker cabinet refinishing shop / new Teak Veneers / Michigan / Thiel CS1.2 speakers

Hello, this is my first post in Audiokarma after referencing for many years. I just picked up a working pair of Thiel CS1.2 speakers- they sound amazing; however they are in rough cosmetic shape. Looking to have damaged old veneers stripped, new Teak veneers applied and finished, and gouges along the edges and base repaired. Welcome to AK. It'd be useful to know your general location, and some pics of the speakers and damage could be useful....interesting at the very least!
 
Thank you so much for your welcome, and for you response! I'm located in northwest Michigan (not the UP). I added a few photos and can get some close up images as well- a bit hard to tell, but there are multiple scratches in the veneer, dented edges and corners, and areas with chipped and faded veneer. The base wood is crushed/gouged in areas on both speakers. There are also several cigarette burns on the veneer, water rings from cups being placed on top, and smears of apparent varnish on them. I will be putting new cloth on the grills, and sending the woofers away for repairs (one has a diy cement glue repair) soon, as I wish to restore them.

Teak, as we boaters know it, is now basically unavailable.

African Teak will be your closest available match, not the same but hopefully it’ll be fine.
 
Thank you for sharing this- I love this grain pattern as well. Considered repairing myself for the short term- sanding down and using wood epoxy to re-form the dents, corners etc, touching up with stain markers, but I think that would make applying a new veneer much more difficult. I would rather invest the $ for the supplies into a restoration.
 
On the east side of the state I’ve stopped at a shop, I believe it is called Woodworker’s Supply, has a lot of veneers and supplies.
 
I grew up on the Lake Michigan side, I don’t remember anyone specifically who sells veneers there but I’m in Holland today and will ask.
 
Teak veneer is $$$; that Oakwood link will show you that. Actually, Oakwood has a wide selection of exotic woods in different cuts and you might want to peruse the selection and opt for a different wood. There are so many beautiful choices available.

Those cabs could be bondoed and sanded to provide a solid, flat substrate to bond to, so removing the old veneer is not necessary, but the time and materials cost could run well over $700+ easy and far more if a second sheet is needed or you want them to finish it. I see they don’t flow the grain over the top, so you probably can get by with a single 4x8 sheet if you skip the backs, which is a very common thing in furniture.

FWIW, that Oakwood link is to veneered panels for construction, not sheets. Here’s a link to teak sheets that are what you need for your project.

BTW, you need to pick the sheets yourself, as a random online order choice may not meet your expectations as color and grain vary quite a bit.

Thank you so much! This is all excellent info and just what I need- I'll call the company as well and see if they can recommend anyone. I found a few lower cost alternatives on the site. The cost estimate is more than I want to put into the speakers, and may reconsider refinishing/wood epoxy repairs myself. Appreciative for your time and input!

You really need to find a faux painter & cabinet refinisher. My brother in law is in the Detroit area could make them look like they just came out of the factory. Do a search in your area for a faux painter, if you can find the right person it will save you a lot of money compared to a woodworker.

As a construction superintendent in Aspen for over 25 years, I can attest that a good faux painter can correct and fix Imperfections that would have cost thousands to fix.

I have family in the Detroit area as well and often make the drive, if by chance your brother in law may do "small" repairs like this and offer a quote?
