Recommended speakers for a Pioneer SX-1010

Hello to all. I got lucky and found one of my Holy Grail receivers for a reasonable price, a Pioneer SX-1010. This made me extremely happy, but I knew I had a problem. The only speakers I have currently are Realistic Minimus 7s. Great bookshelf speakers that punch above their weight, but I know they're not enough for a 100 wpc SX-1010.

I just don't know speakers very well. Does anyone have any recommendations for good speakers? My family room is around 12X16 feet with a small kitchen beyond it. I have wood laminate flooring, not a carpet. I listen to everything from 1960s-1990s rock, blues, pre-2000 country, alternative, movie soundtracks with plenty of orchestra. Space is a little bit of an issue so an oversized bookshelf, or small floor speakers would be preferred. New speakers or vintage speakers works for me. So if you know some current production speakers I can order now that's good with me.

Any advice and recommendations you can provide I will greatly appreciate. Thank you.

As Lux Man asked,what's your budget?

Also,speakers are more of a personal preference thing, what sounds good to others ears may not sound good to your ears.
Also,your area affects the sound.
 
Looking at my local Marketplace and within an hour of me is a pair of Realistic Optimist 5 speakers for $100, and a pair of Advent 5012 speakers for $250. Quick research shows the Advents get a lot of online love. Not finding much of any reviews on the Optimist 5s. Any a good possibility?
 
With the Advents you have to be concerned with who did the woofer refoam, and was it done correctly. If it was even done.

Can you demo both?

Maybe you should try Realistic OPTIMUS 5 in your Google search if you didn't already. Spell-check is not your friend in this case! :thumbsup:
Do not take that as my endorsement of the pursuit of Realistic speakers as your solution.

I can tell my search was fine as I just highlighted the text in the ad and right clicked "Search Google" in the resulting menu.

This of course has nothing to do with my typing anything on this forum before my coffee has been consumed.

While the search had many facts about the OPTIMUS 5, it had almost nothing in the way of user experiences and opinions. While things like height, width, weight, when manufactured, and videos on repairing the speakers are good things to know, it wasn't the information I was wanting in that early morning search. For whatever reason, the Googles had opinions on the quality of sound from Advents higher up in the search results.

With that budget, think outside the box if you can. The DCM Time Window is miles ahead of many monkey coffins as are a number of other oddly shaped speakers. You can find Dahlquist 10s or some of the others even some of their box speakers and get great sound for the money.

Not knowing if you are looking for Loud, Power, Peel Plaster, Heavy Metal all day long or nice Jazz group at the local club or the full symphony at the local venue, it is hard to say what to get.

Price, we have that, now help us help you with more info.
Sound you want, maybe music you like, too.
WAF limitations

There are so many different speakers that will work well with 100 wpc, you need to thin that list by offering more info about what you want to see and hear. Then with your location stated somewhere, some folks might look at OU, fbmp and CL and clue you up to a great deal.

At 400, I'm looking for some high end speakers not popular bookshelf speakers that folks bought because they fit the budget back in the day. Sure there are more Advents than Time Windows but lots of speakers show up on the used market.

For heavens sake , grab the 5s. NOW.
They love power ( I know) and the 1010 is just what they need . Lol , the poster above me recapped mine. They’re all you need.
 
I own a SX-939, literally the little brother to the SX-1010. The SX-939 is rated at 70wpc. I swear it puts out more power though. The tone controls on this receiver actually work, meaning that when I turn the bass up, the bass actually goes up significantly and with authority. Multi-driver tower speakers that need a lot of power will be no problem for your SX-1010. Low SPL bookshelf speakers (86dB) will not be a problem either. Infinity REFERENCE SIX speakers will be at the bottom of the list and it only goes up from there regarding wattage. Put it this way. If you can find a pair of power hungry low SPL speakers, try them and you will be amazed out how easily the SX-1010 will drive them.
 
ALSO, has your SX-1010 ever been restored?

My SX-939, when I bought it 10 years ago sounded like he((. Really noisy. It was in dire need of a restoration. I bought a restoration kit for it off eBay from PEACE.LOVE&MUSIC. I did the work myself. It was the best money I ever spent. If your SX-1010 is noisy and static-y sounding, then it is in need of a restoration. The knobs and switches will need to be cleaned with DEOXIT.

The SX-1010 and 939 are the GREATEST!

This generation of receivers definitely need to be restored to achieve reliability and restore sound quality. Have had both, restored, and agree with you 100%. Still have the 1010.
 
This is a common question. What amp doesn't make a difference.
I would search locally. Speakers are expensive to ship.
Look around audition speakers and ask questions.
If you edit your profile to show where you live somebody might know something.
 
From small bookshelf to large floor standing, NHT made very good sounding, relatively inexpensive speakers.

If you could increase your budget a bit, I'd be on the lookout for ADS L710's. A few years ago I owned both the 1010 & 710's. The sound that combo produces is awesome.

Ohm C2 would do nicely if you're in an area where they were popular. Restored AR2ax are in your price range.
