I heard on the radio that vinyl sales are soaring while CD's are on the decline. It has been good for the bands but overall the picture is not good for the artists. Still more downloads than anything else besides piracy.

Am I the only who doesn't miss the *hassles of vinyl (I stored my records away in the early 1990s and haven't looked back)? And sound-wise, if the recording chain is digital until it hits the disc master, can the sound be really better then a full digital copy (unless you're acknowledging that the vinyl playback process is actually adding something to the recording, which would be anathema to the typical audiophile)?

* I do, however, miss the fantastic artwork you'd sometimes get with a good gatefold album.

You mean like the lovely soft clipping you can get from a tube amp? Sometimes audiophiles love when something is added. Or maybe a better example is when dither is added to a high res file as it is resampled to Redbook. It is pretty much universally accepted at this point that adding noise improves the sound quality.

This is the second post today that I've seen that seems to miss the concept that digital recordings can be made at different resolutions. Digital masters are most likely going to be made at resolutions much better than Redbook CD can reproduce.
