Record Store Day

Twist and Shout was crazy to say the least. I was number 119 in line waiting to open, and the line went around the building. Over 300 at the last count. But I got all I wanted so it was good :)

I did ok too; Metallica, Miles Davis and Townes Van Zandt LPs, Flaming Lips pink 7", Carolina Chocloate Drops/Run DMC (clear wax), MC5/Afrika Bambatta (peppermint wax), Fiestadon (Fiest + Mastadon split), Small Faces 7" and Captain Beefhart Diddy Wah Diddy 2x7"

Very crowded -- music by The Duke of Uke and his Novelty Orchestra (great stuff)

I purchased:

"Horses" by Patti Smith, vinyl re-release
"Thai Funk Volume One" -- vinyl collection, new pressing, material dating from the 1970s
"Dave Brubeck Quartet: Their Last Time Out" -- CD
The Decemberists -- "We All Raise Our Voices to the Air (Live Songs 04/11-08/11)" -- CD [a gift for my wife, but I like them too]

and a free burnt orange tote back because I spent just barely over a hundred bucks.

Missed the Brubeck 10-inch....

Here's where: Exile on Main Street, Champaign, IL

I cruised back over to twist & shout yesterday afternoon to grab a couple more 7"s (foster the ppl and minus the bear) and the crowd had finally thinned out a little bit. It was still difficult navigating the aisles and checkout was about 20 minutes. Great ppl watching if anything. Those hipsters come up with unique outfits.

All of the sought after stuff was gone. Lots of John Denver left though.

well guys , I did it big this year. I had decided to really get into it and hunt for the releases I wanted. I got up at 5:30am so I could get to the west Seattle easy street records which opens at 7am (apparently they are the first record store to open on the west coast). I got there at 6:15 and was about 75th in line, had a real nice chat with the guy behind me in line then they opened the doors. It was a total mob scene, people fighting to get to the records, flipping from the opposite side of the table sticking their arms in front of you while you were flipping to flip the records in the same stack as you. it really discouraged me, I'm not like that , I refuse to fight with people over records. I just waited until the smoke cleared and picked up some good stuff. the Dr. John album being one of the best. pretty disappointed that I didn't get any of the records on my list, I ran to another store , the line was about a block long , forget it , I wasn't going through that again. then my buddy called from a third record store and he had picked up the flaming lips album I really wanted to get. so I sped over and met him, got that and a couple of other things. giving up on the new RSD releases,I went to three more record stores and picked up some used stuff.

all in all , I had a great day , went to 5 stores, got to support the people who help support our hobby, and I got some great records. I didn't get the releases I really wanted but thats ok. so what I learned from this years record store day: stay in bed and buy the rare releases off ebay, go to the used record stores and stock up on stuff there.

on a side note, I really think this record store day is great for the business. I have had several friends who have opened and closed record stores, all have had a real passion for it and all paid the price for that passion, years and years of struggle. it makes me happy to see small time record store owners doing well now, they deserve some success!

also picked up this limited edition poster from my friends at Jive Time Records, one of the best record stores in seattle!

As I mentioned before - I didn't see the new Cure -Entreat. For those that did pick it up, have you had a chance to listen to it and how do the drums sound? Some people said on the cd the remaster cut some of the punch out of them.

I left out that at Cactus Records, Evanescence was on hand to sign CD's (I don't think they have anything on vinyl officially.)

Thanks to everyone that came me out, wherever you live. Yesterday was the busiest and most fun day we have had since opening our little record store. Easily the most profitable too!

I'm listening to the new Entreat Plus LP right now. Not only are the drums muffled compared to my Entreat CD, but the it seems bass-shy as well. Somewhere around here I have a bootleg of Entreat on clear vinyl I need to find and compare as well.

[edit] Found my bootleg LP, which bears the subtitle "Tales of Ordinary Madness". This seems to be a transfer of the original eight-song CD to vinyl, although with the tracks in a different order, perhaps to fit them on the two sides of a single LP better. Some of the pre-song banter seems to have been edited out as well. Even so, this sounds punchier and better balanced than the new double LP.

If you missed out on the new reissue, don't feel too bad about it. I'm kinda thinking I should have picked up the Lee Hazelwood instead.

Did anybody pick up the GRATEFUL DEAD Dark Star Europe 72 180 Gram 12"? Was it worth the buy?

I bought a few of used records, and a couple of new. Used I got Bowwowwow "I want Candy", The Pretenders "Pretenders", House of Large Sizes "Heat Miser" and Full Fathom Five 12" single "Paingiver". The last two are bands from Iowa who I saw many times back in the mid eighties when I lived in Cedar Falls, fun to find obscure stuff like that in California. New, I bought the Rhino Side by Side single of "Kick Out The Jams" w/MC5 on one side and Afrika Bambaataa on the other (pink and white vinyl) and The Birthday Party "Peel Sessions" album. I also walked out with a couple of freebies, a Kiss at Cobo Hall 1977 DVD and a couple of CD singles of bands I've never heard of. I also picked up a BSR 10 band equalizer at a garage sale for $5. Spinners Records in Fresno, CA, they had a free raffle and gave out at least 5 $100 bills, Van Halen tix, Chili Pepper tix, a whole bunch of Led Zep on red vinyl. For the last month, if you bought 3 item you got a chance at $3000 worth of stereo which they gave away. Free food, lots of new friends, an awesome day!

I haven't opened mine from the shrink wrap yet, but I almost expected this. I mean, when has a remaster actually sounded better ?? Not very common from what I hear

they were a record store day exclusive give-a-way. I can walk down tomorrow and see if they have any more. I am real friendly with the guys so I think I may be able to score you one (if they have any left) I'll pm you if I can get one, just cover shipping and its yours!

Hands down, the best record store in Seattle!

Hey, I'm listening to this now. It's a very well-made pressing, nicely presented. Solid acoustic quality. So far as I can determine, it is a mixture of covers of familiar songs (some in medley) and some original stuff, all from different artists.
