Record weight question

Appease my earhole.
I have been playing some classical records this morning, and noticed one is badly dished. That has me thinking that a record weight might be a good idea. I was thinking of a DIY project. I already have a hockey puck weight, but it's not heavy enough to flatten a dished record. My question is, how heavy is safe for a direct-drive turntable? Is there an ideal weight? I will be using it mostly on a Denon DP-33F, and Technics SL-1300 and 1800.

I might consider a factory made weight or clamp, but $100+ seems steep for a lump of machined aluminum...

you would need something like brass to get the weight you want't.

You can't go too extreme and would not be need all the time.

With the puck you have can you make an add on stackable heavy puck?
 
Esoteric sound sells a Rek-O-Kut weight for $55 plus shipping. They also have a lighter weight model for suspended tables like the later Empires. I have no affiliation with them.
 
I guess the hockey puck is cheap enough being DIY. If anything I'd go for a lower weight clamp. Or if you really want to save money just get another copy of the record that isn't warped and be more careful when examining records for condition. Clamps/weights aren't going to be a game changer with a good table properly set up and records in good condition, no hidden secret ingredients that makes a sows ear into a silk purse, just good basics.
 
If you want something that works and is not 100+, try out the Clear Audio Clever Clamp, works great and doesnt add weight.
 
Also, a weight/clamp is really a %50 percent solution on dished records. It's not going to do much on the concave side...

True.... But that would be 50% more than I currently have. I realize that a weight won't solve the VTA and azimuth problems of a concave record, but I would imagine that it would help the record make better contact with the platter at the center, which should reduce resonance and any possible wobble at the spindle. Does that make sense? I can't see how it could hurt.

I am constantly looking to upgrade my collection. I replace records as opportunities present, but until some of these are replaced, why not make the listening experience the best it can be? None of these are unplayable as they are. Records that are too warped or dished for my better styli are reserved for playback only with my conical carts or Shure M97xE, and if they are too rough to sound decent with those cartridges, they will get tossed. (Preferably at the skeet range. :D )

A reflex clamp like the Michell can help moderately dished records.
