Rectilinear III - Specs, Freq. Response and Original Price

Hey,

If he's got the one pot on the back, it's the early version. The larger value on the cap is between 95 and 100uF. The later III's had a 60uF cap and 2 pots. I think my Mini III's had 90uF.

Awesome thanks. Now to search for cheap caps, I don't want to sink too much into this set, just want them up and running again.

Hey,

I'm with you brother man. Remember, whatever you path you choose to take with replacing the capacitors, changing them out in the future is always an easy thing to do. When I drug home the Wreckedilinears I received some great advice. In both my early and later versions I used a nice metal/film capacitor for the tweeters, the 2uF. They affordable, no questions there. However, as you know the larger value for the midrange is the one that's going to be about 25 bux a piece. I was told that the midrange cap isn't as critical as the one for the tweeter and it was okay to go ahead and use a non-polarized electrolytic. They're only a few bux or less a piece. I chose the NP Electrolytics for both my early and later version's midrange cap. The Wreckedilinear received metalized/film bypass caps and the early version received none. No audible difference between the two is perceivable. Madisound sells Bennic NP Electrolytics, those are the ones I used. Go now!

briggles - WRECKEDILINEARS ! yep.. that is what I have alright. I have decided I can't adopt and totally restore every homeless speaker I bring home. These have potential ,, but probably more for a dorm room or man cave. Thanks for the tip on the madisound bennics.. just perfect. Now searching for a cheap 4.5 inch midrange replacement.. I guess 8 ohm, from what I can tell. Heck, I might even splurge and get a matching pair so the other speaker does not get jealous.

Hey,

Oh poo, I'll bet you can get them ready for anyone's living room with a little effort. The veneer is pretty thick and the front trim is solid, can take some abuse with your sanding. Stop searching for the midranges and contact Kirk57. He bought a pair of Tangband's that are a perfect replacement and an upgrade to the originals, no mods. I have the model number marked somewheres, it's mentioned in one of my two III threads. That's what you want to get.

How long was the white grillecloth around?

Most of all the grilles I've seen are that blood orange color.

I don't know exactly. Generally speaking, the white cloth were the earlier 1960's version with the 1 pot on the back. As the 70's rolled in, they changed the crossover a bit and added the tweeter/midrange pots and went to a more "modern" grill color and texture.

Here's a shot of the early versions before the restoration, next to the Wreckedilinears.

Just a FYI on the Mids, I have found on several Rectilinear mids that a wire at the tinsel lead had become hot and unsoldered. I believe it was from being over driven. It may be possible to re-solder the wire at the tinsel lead if this is the case. If you can't find a mid let me know, I may have an extra. I believe the model # you need is Philips 5061/M8 to help you with your search. Double check your # it could be a 5060/M8 as well. The only difference I believe is that the 5061 had a stronger magnet. Either can work if you adjust the mid control on the speaker. Best of luck!

To me, the Highboys just "look" 1960s to me.

When I got mine- they had been installed into a built in- put in in 1966 or so, had a grille installed in front of them and not touched for 40+ years. They were outrageously pristine.

I like to think that someone sliced open the plastic and spun Revolver or Sgt Pepper or Let It Bleed or Sticky Fingers for the first time. Every time I play "Tomorrow Never Knows" I think of how mind blowingly amazing it must've been in 1966. And to hear it out of THOSE speakers.

That's what was wrong with my 2 mids, worned and broke tinsel leads. Mine were probably from being over-driven, I saw the home they came from. But since those mids do most of the work in the III's, I wouldn't be surprised if they just failed from time to time from normal use.

Love the orange bat phone! We have same thermo, hygrometer as you. My new pair match down to the color shift as the ones on the right.

I love that phone, got half a dozen more. Up until a year ago, I had a matching orange rotary wall phone in the kitchen. Badass.

Yeah, those early III's white grill cloth gets NASTY. I can't remember how exactly I cleaned them, probably in my thread somewheres. I do know I unstrung the backing cloth and the grill cloth, tossed the backing cloth. That stuff completely stopped any of the highs coming through.

And that right there my good man, is why some of us would rather have the vintage gear. Nostalgia feels good.
