Rectilinear xii questions

Those look really great - - very much like the typical vintage AR grille cloth or its modern replacement (from 1,2,3 stitch). BTW I think your R-III grilles may be upside down (badge goes on top).

Thanks ra.ra I put the badges back the way they came off when I got them. I guess the were on wrong also.

Rectilinear did not use Bogen speakers in these earlier models (III, X, Xa, XI, XII, but maybe not other a,b variants). The tweeters were the Peerless, mide Phillips, and woofers varied a bit but mostly CTI or earlier Jansen.

Later comment: my statement has proved to be wrong, see later.

Any pics or dates on the CTS woofers, Gaz?
They're from 1971. Its possible that CTS may not have been able to hit the production numbers they were needing, and Bogen was able to make up the difference(but not as cheaply), or a dozen other scenarios.

I'm told mine (xii) are definitely Bogen and dated 1971. I have no reason to think they are not original.

I'm sure they are original, I never knew Rectilinear used Bogen drivers. Then again, Rectilinear wasn't all about the drivers, they were about driver matching and using their brain to make the best product out of commonly available stuff.

Here is a photo showing the new grill cloth. I bought a remnant of "20 count un-bleached natural scrim linen".

I think the black material behind the linen is making it look more grey in the photo than it really is.

Hey Wicked,

Lucky dog. I went to my local mega Joanne's fabric store 2 weeks ago looking for scrim anything. Nada. The woman I asked didn't know what scrim was, neither did her coworkers.

I know!

So now that they sound great and the grills look great, my son says "can't you do something about the wood?"

Arghh

Hmmm. Did you ask him for suggestions on what he thought you should do about the wood? I'd kinda like to know.

He just said "they look a little worn out" :)

I'll try the Howard's I think.

Love it. Yeah, a good cleaning with wood soap, then Howards will do wonders. It isn't the same as a complete sand down and refinish, but the results can be wonderful.

I say, pull them out this weekend and spend an hour or two and get it taken care of. It's no big deal.

It's really up to you. I've been down the darker walnut flavored Howards and Danish Oil routes, I don't like it. I like being able to see the grain of the wood, the colors and contrast. The darker colors can make those wonderful artifacts tough to see. I would suggest going with the walnut, the lighter the better. You generally do 2 applications. If you want something darker, you can always go back and buy the dark walnut and apply it, no harm no foul. I use 0000 steel wool to apply the second application. Smooth, even strokes over the entire surface. Wipe dry.

You will smile.

I bought some Howard's and will get that project going, BUT in the meantime I have some static in one of the speakers.

I don't think it was there when I first played them. I did experiment with the tweeter and mid pots the other day....

Thoughts on that?

The pots on mine are really flaky, I'd start there. That is if you've already checked to see that none of the voice coils are rattling.
